Do you have an emergency kit?
I haven't because so much of what they want is duplicates that stay packed and yikes.. I haven't been able to get duplicates for all of us. Not to mention having to remember to size up everyone as they grow and add in new ones.
But one of the Boy Scout Merit Badges is Emergency Preparedness and it has setting up an emergency kit for the family.. so I guess now's the time for me to do that.
Well not this minute but probably within the year.
So.. do you have one? what things do YOU put in that might not be on a generic list? what about for big families? I know they recommend one bag and I'm thinking.. and then who would be able to carry it  So I already know that to adapt for the family size I'll want 2 or more smaller bags.

We have a first aid kit in a plastic, lidded container and a box with all our important documents.
Whenever weather looks bad the first thing we do is gas up all the cars and get cash - imagine having no power for a few days...
I should pack emergency clothes, though.

Hey, Jodie...I'm wondering, if our family looks at our family travel plan as part of an emergency plan/kit, that might help us to get it organized. Hmmmmmmmmm

It could.. especially if it's something that you can keep up to date.. i'm not sure if I'm up to adding in another bag to keep up to date on clothing sizes..
I was thinking things like sweats with drawstrings that start out at least a size big on everyone growing. so that it should last a good year or two before being revamped.

But certainly the first aid kit and toiletries and such.. if you were to have a dedicated bag for travel would be reasonable to use as part of the emergency supplies as well.

Our first aid kit is our "all medicine box" so when we travel, we take it all, whether we need it or not. I don't really have a place to store medicines that is safe from littles. So I bought a plastic box with a lid and we keep everything in there from albuterol for asthma, to my ds's poison ivy medicine, to band-aids. My SIL, who is a nurse actually started it for us. She included a few pairs of doctors gloves, ace bandages, bandage scissors and even a needle and thread for sutures! I pray I will never have to mess with that, but it's in there!
Other than that, we are not very prepared for an emergency evacuation. If there's a tornado, the room we go to is the same room where we store extra water and canned goods so we would at least have food and water in that situation.

Does preparing for a hurricane count????
Every year at this time hubby and I get out hurricane kit ready. We have a large bin (and I mean large bin) and it has all our hurricane supplies.
We also have one "emergency bag" This is actually empty. We have a list that is laminated that stays at the bottom. We pack our things to get out in a hurry. I have a storage unit in the bottom of our van and I have a bag that gets changed every season that goes in there so there is no need for clothes in our emergency bag. In the storage bin goes change of clothes for all of us, diapers, wipes and extra toiletries( toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and shampoo)
What is on our emergency bag list:
1. Important documents: These are grouped together in our safe in a plastic document holder. Including Social security cards, passports, marriage license, birth certificates and insurance policies
2. Medicines and sunscreen and insect repellent.
3. Three CD's and 3 DVD's with computer back up info; this also has all contact info for our friends, family and business needs and medical records for the kids.
4. Contact info for my husbands job: Since my hubby is in a specialized unit of law enforcement we have special numbers for contact in case of emergency situations.
5. Jewelry: My husband leaves his ring and we have some other things that need to be packed.
We would also throw our hurricane bin in the back of the car which would contain enough for us to live on for 3 days.
If anyone is interested I can give you more details about our hurricane bin but its pretty standard stuff and most definitely a can opener and disposable cups, plates and utensils.

Several of you have mentioned the important documents.
I keep imagining a bin near the front door or in a corner, and it seems like the important documents are so vulnerable.
Anyone else have other documents you put in? Do you have the originals somewhere else and these are the copies? or do you have copies in other places?

I have lots of other documents...sacramental records, shot cards (vaccinations), credit card #s, things like that.
We also have our cats' vaccination records in there, and I recently remembered to add our safe deposit box key.
Ideally these would be in a fireproof portable safe, but... 
Another thing I would suggest is to photograph all the rooms of your house, the exterior of your home and your cars. Put it all on a SanDisk or something similar and throw it into the box.

A good friend of mine is LDS and I think that as a community, the LDS have mastered preparedness. She has been a tremendous source of ideas and wisdom for me in this regard.

My friend keeps everything in her car trunk (one set in each car). She has a family of 5. She says that she rotates clothing each season. I asked how she keeps the food fresh and she said that often if they are at a sports activity, or stop at a park, or have some other delay, she'll use the food/snacks from her kit and then replenish it when she gets home. This is such a way of life for them, so instead of packing for every excursion, she is basically packed for anywhere they want to go.
We are working on our kits. We bought two good sized rolling duffles on sale. We'll pack one for the girls and one for the guys (since if we have to go to a shelter, we'll need separate toiletries and things in the restrooms/showers).
