Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm trying to put together a unit to teach my kids the value and practice of orderliness. I need to engage their imaginations to make this real for them, and have something to refer back to when I'm oh-so-gently reminding them why they need to get the wet towels off the floor! They totally get the sloppy genes from their mom so instilling this virtue would be a boon to my marriage as well!

Bible verses, stories, saints' lives, picture books, lesson plans, chore charts--whatever you've seen that you think reinforces the concepts of orderliness and responsibility, I'd love to hear it!

{I've already looked at KONOS' Orderliness unit and gleaned a few things, but I'm looking for stuff that's more specific to the virtue itself than to, say, animal classification and house construction!}

This poem by Shel Silverstein may be a fun addition.
Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out

Also, this one:

Why do I have to clean my room?
a poem by, Jack Prelutsky

Why do I have to clean my room
when I would rather play?
The crayons scattered on the floor
are hardly in the way.
I almost never trip upon
my basketball or drums,
and I don’t pay attention
to the cake and cookie crumbs.

Why do I have to clean my room?
I think my room looks nice.
There’s pizza in the corner,
but its only half a slice.
I'm not at all concerned about
the gravy on the chair,
my piles of model planes and trains,
my stacks of underwear.

I will admit some bits of clay
are sticking to the wall.
I scarcely even notice them
and do not mind at all.
Beneath my bed there’s just a wedge
of last weeks apple pie,
and yet I have to clean my room...
I simply don’t know why.

Theresa,

I thought about the Shel Silverstein poem--I did that for a recital when I was in school! And my kids love the Jack Prelutsky poems we've memorized. Fun!

Angi,

I need it too!

I love this- what a great idea, Nicole!   I will think on this while being taxi driver today. And looking forward to what others come up with- I love Shel Silverstein's poems!

God Bless,

Are you familiar with the books of St. Josemaria? He has several that give little meditations on different virtues (The Way, The Forge, and Furrow). For example, this is from The Forge, #806:

"Order will bring harmony to your life, and lead you to perseverance. Order will give peace to your heart, and weight to your behaviour."

He has many ideas on using your time well that might be helpful in a study of orderliness.
