Is this the size you'll be working with, Bridget? Or do you have a larger version.
I don't have instructions on how, but everyone loves two-dimensional or pop-up scenes. All the Christmas books I have have been inspiring me to try something.
For a simple 2-D, have two copies, cut out all the people figures in one copy, and then glue on the figures in different heights. I haven't thought of different ways to do it, foam backing, folded cardboard, thick glue. But do different thicknesses. I was thinking putting Jesus most prominent, but that would change the picture somewhat.
I love the image. Is it a mosaic? It looks like it's from Art Deco period. Any more information on this? It reminds me of another church I saw in Cambria City, PA, but I can't find pictures right now.
Other ideas would be adding irridescent glitter (see www.artglitter.com) to match the painting. Or making it an open up picture, having Mary and Joseph move into the picture (like a pop-up book). But that takes some planning and finesse.
Wouldn't it be cool to do all the Joyful mysteries in a 2-d way?

Thanks Jenn. I found the picture at Franciscan Crown Rosary
I have never heard of this type of rosary before. All the pictures there are exquisite. I have not been able to find out any more about them yet.
I may try the 2-d idea with them.

Bridget, The images on that site are beautiful. I've never seen any of them. Perhaps you could print the image and decoupage it onto a lovely wooden box to hold rosaries. The Annunciation, Mary Meets Jesus after the Resurraction, and the Coronation are inspiring as well, as are ALL of the images! Thank you for sharing this.

These ideas are great! I love reading all the brainstorming!
Since it is coming up, I wonder if you might be able to tie the image into the Feast of the Epiphany somehow, telling the children how our hearts are meant to seek for Jesus. (Paraphrasing St. Augustine's: My heart is restless until it rests in Thee, O Lord.") The Wise Men sought Him by following a Star and were rewarded by the sight of the Christ Child. Mary and Joseph sought him frantically, and were rewarded to find Him in the Temple, the Son of God remaining obedient to them. When we search for Him, we will always find him, for He says, "Seek and Ye Shall Find, Knock and It Shall Be Opened to You."
Telling them this, I would hold up a box, perhaps with a lid made to look like a door, and ask the children to knock on it. (This could even be just a cardstock or paper door if you do not have a box handy.) Behind the door, show the beautiful picture of the Finding, telling the children that no matter how old they grow, no matter what life brings them, they need only remember to seek for Him as the Wise Men and Mary and Joseph did so many years ago.

Bridget,
I don't have any brilliant ideas for you on this picture, which is absolutely beautiful.
I do have an idea to pass on for future reference. When my oldest was still in Catholic school, and I helped with the "picture lady" program, we made a mosaic of Christ at 33. Every class, from k-8 (and there were 3 each, after kindergarten,) had a section of this painting. They then cut and tore pieces of magazines, that they thought matched their section, colorwise. Then they glued them all on. When each class finished, all the sections were put together. It was truly amazing how beautiful it was. If you are ever in the neighborhood of St. Michael's school, Livonia, it is hanging in the hallway.
I have considered doing this with a smaller painting, of what, I don't know. I guess when I see it, I'll know.
