OK, I am the most non-artistic mom in the world, and I've been asked to costume a horse next Sunday for Halloween! My dd Jane, age 14, rides at a therapeutic riding ranch run by such lovely folks. Next Sunday is their winter hay fundraiser, and part of the "action" is a costume contest for the horses. (You can view Jane's horse, Annie, and a link to an article featuring Jane, at the website www.hoperanchks.com ) I don't even know where to start. (I'm also pretty distracted by dh's sudden health issues--please pray!) Please, some creative someone, make a suggestion or two?

American Indian is the easiest. Paint a circle around one eye, dip your hand in paint and put a handprint on the rump of the horse, feathers in the mane and tail and ride bareback or on a saddle pad blanket (what are they called??? It is a blanket with cinch and a little extra padding, it's like a soft saddle...cannot remember but they are very comfy)
Alternatively, if you have a white or black horse, buy/make a unicorn's horn and dress as a princess.
Those are two fairly easy ones, lots of other ideas but they get pretty intricate, ex. attach a second head to the back of the horse and go as a Push-me-Pull-you.  Though another fun and easy one you can always do is just spraypaint the horse a funny color and go as a 'horse of a different color'!

MY daughter was at a local costume horse show last week.
Some costumes she saw were:
Hawaiian horse and rider with hula skirts, clowns, rider is a witch and the horse is a bat, dancing couple--a top hat on the horse with a bow tie and a gown on the rider, a "dalmation" horse and a firefighter rider.

You could attach a pair of butterfly/angel wings for a pegasus!

A black top hat with cut-outs so the ears could stick through it and a tie around its neck would be cute. You could even braid it's tail and put on black and white velcro-spats. I love that!

Thanks for the great suggestions! Jane and I went to Hobby Lobby and the sale prices made the decision for us. We bought a green grass "hula skirt" table skirt for the horse to wear as a skirt (worked perfectly) and several flower leis to go around her neck, her tail and to be woven around her bridle and reins. She looked lovely, though at first the skirt was NOT to her liking.
The horse with the dragon costume won the prize. Another horse was dressed as a witch, and a third had a very cute "Bob the Builder" costume, complete with yellow helmet, denim apron and a yellow pocketed "throw" over the horse's back with tools in the pockets. Very creative.
The weather was perfect and lots of people came. The ranch was able to raise a good portion of the money they needed to feed the horses for winter. And everyone had a terrific time.
