Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This seems to be an issue every time I cook in bulk for the freezer.

We've been through so many can openers lately- electric and manual. I just broke an electric one, and it only lasted through a few cans. The crank ones are hard on my old wrists.

Any suggestions? Empathy?

We have had the Smooth Edge OXO for a few years now. I love it. It did take a few tries to figure how how to use it, but after that I have never had an issue.

I just grabbed the first listing that I found of this can opener, I am positive that I didn't pay this much for it!

Oxo locking Can Opener is the one I use.. yes you still have to crank them but it's a much easier crank than many plus the locking means you don't have to squeeze down while cracking too.. in general it's just the easiest hand crank I've used. I don't care for the electric ones.. but that may be because I hate having to get it out to use and with littles can't leave it sitting out. (how many cans of fruit/applesauce can you open before mom catches you? )

But it seems to me that the commercial hand cranks are the full arm crank rather than all on your wrist.. so that might be something to check into if you have somewhere to mount one.

Thanks, Betsy and Jodie! I guess you get what you pay for. Mine have been bottom of the line can openers, both hand held and the electric one.

I wonder if cans have changed? I remember when I was fist married, and we had a little cheap can opener. It worked great, and was easy to use. We lost it in a move, and none of the replacements have worked as well.

Jodie, I had to laugh when I pictured your little ones opening up cans of fruit. Mine would have done the same thing when they were smaller!

Thanks!

It's probably not the can that have changed but the openers. So many of these types of things are just plain JUNK! A few years ago my family and I had to live in a sparsely furnish apartment until we found a home.

I broke almost all of the utensils in the kitchen and after 2 months we were fixing dining rooms chairs and tables. It was really sad, because I am sure that none of the stuff we broke was free, just really really cheap!

I agree about spending money for a good one. The one we have right now gets the job done but isn't *great*, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, but I have had REALLY bad luck with cheap ones--they dull so quickly, which makes them really hard to operate.

Cans did change.. oh goodness when was that .. anyway at one time they were actually made out of tin (tin cans) and the content changed and then again when they put the coating inside some of the cans.. but yes the cans have changed.

But so have the can openers. Nothing lasts as long as it did. Even in a fairly short time. As in the washing machine I got new 14 years ago had a longer expected life span than a washer would have now buying new. I imagine the can openers aren't made with the same precision so the gripping and cutting ability is lessened and they may not be as sharp and the metal may be softer so even if it's sharp it's not as strong and may dull much faster etc.

That's what I have, too. I've had it for 10+ years.
