The good news: I have been invited on a press trip.
The bad news: I have to wear "business attire" in Amsterdam, both indoors and outdoors (same day - series of events). It will still be cold out, I am told.
All I can think of is Angela Merkel's pantsuits - not that I've ever owned a pantsuit. The last traditional business suit I bought was new about 15 years ago.
I also need some type of coat - I'm thinking tunic-length or a bit longer - don't know whether I should be going for wool or a trenchcoat with lining. I have to act quickly on the coat because soon all the coats will be gone from stores.
All help and suggestions welcome!

I am no help with fashion.. do pick colors that are good for you you want to look and feel good in whatever it is.
But when you mentioned the wool coat I remembered that landsend has some nice ones and they'd be clearanced about now.. like this wool pea coat which is a fairly classic look.

I like the company J. Peterman for more European styles. This knit suit skirt and jacket look like they would be nice for business and still comfortable.
I also like this wool blend blouse and pants or skirt.
There are also some classy options for outerwear.

Nancy, that is exciting!
I would buy what suits your figure best. Buy your dress, skirt or pantsuit before you buy the coat. Right now we have very cold temps, so make sure the coat is warm. You can wear leather boots too. I would stay away from "loud" colors, but you certainly don't have to wear black either.
How long will you be in Amsterdam? Will you be traveling elsewhere?

I'll only be there a few days and can't add any personal time onto the trip, sadly. I'd love to be able to see some of my friends in Germany and France...but I'm fortunate to be going at all, so I'm thankful for the opportunity.
I do have leather boots already, and plenty of casual/evening wear. People who work from home, like me, just don't need business attire!

I don't think you have to look like a politician to wear "business attire." I'd go with a trim skirt (rather than full or overly long) or more structured pants (like something lined), but if you pair that with a nice blouse (a collar might look more professional) and cardigan, you would be fine, imo. Even a "little black dress" will look professional if it is paired with a scarf and a blazer. I'd probably look for pieces like that over pant suits because they can be paired with other accessories to be used after the trip when you no longer need busines attire but might need to go to a banquet or luncheon or something.
Talbots is another place I would shop for this category of clothing.

Yes, Nancy, I think the trim skirt is a good idea. It is quite cold, so I tend to wear longer skirts, a long sleeved type shirt and jackets or cardigans. Try to mix and match so you can make your wardrobe go farther. And definitely wear the boots if the weather is inclement!
And I definitely second a very warm coat. You will need it. And scarves to go with the coat. Layers will be the key to staying warm, but a warm coat is a definite plus!
