Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We got a flag pole as a gift, and I want to fly the Church's flag over the American flag (since God's laws supercede civil laws), but I am told that the flag etiquette is that the US flag must fly over all other flags.   What would you do?

Our family would follow the flag code.

JUST man's laws are to be followed...St Paul in Romans 13 (footnotes on link are excellent)

Do you plan to follow the codes otherwise (correct way to raise, lower, when fly half-staff, don't touch the ground, ect.), but not this one?

When I've seen both displayed in church, they are displayed next to one another following code. (doesn't address the flag pole issue, but the church isn't displaying them against code)

Thanks for the link ... that helps a lot!

Yes, of course, we would follow the codes of flying a flag and showing respect to the US flag. My question arose out of thinking how God's laws come first and that the Church's flag should (IMHO) be on top (out of love of the Church).

Maybe I should get another pole and fly them side by side!

Thanks for responding!

Technically, you should not put them on the same pole since the Vatican Flag also represents a sovereign nation. But we flew ours on the same pole.

Should you choose to purchase another pole, you must fly the United States flag slightly higher. It is a question of protocol. Do a google on flag code or protocol.

My dh and ds are scouts. And a dear friend is retired navy ... this is where my information comes from. Hope this helps!

If I only had one pole (which, we don't even have that, though my husband really wants one), I would probably just choose to fly the Vatican flag if you have such a preference for the Vatican flag being more prevalent, yk, if that's what better represents your family's values. It isn't an anti-patriotic statement to simply not fly the American flag. You could even keep one to run up on American holidays, etc...
