Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm invited to a lot of baby showers and have noticed that many of the women include a handmade gift-crochet baby blanket, sewn fleece blanket, hoody bath towel, booties. I could make those, but would like to find something different so that it's not a duplicate. Any ideas? I also would like to be able to give this type of gift to mothers who are having their 2nd or 3rd (or 6th plus as it usually is) child.

Have you seen those new nursing covers with the interesting names? These nursing covers look really neat to make, though I'm sure the boning would be hard, but even without, it looks like a very neat handmade gift.

Otherwise, a hat, sweater, or something for the mom, like a pretty scarf to accessorize her outfit or diaper bag.

I bought one of those nursing covers, and just love it. The boning is just some plastic strip that gives the peek-a-boo from the top, but total coverage. This site and here are similar.

Fuzzy received some cloth diapers that we use for burping that had some nice stitching and pretty designs on them. If you went to a baby boutique you'd see how much they charge for those little embellishments! Expensive. It's nice to have "pretty" burp rags when out in public.

And I received a Vera Bradley baby bag and noticed that it has a changing pad that is totally washable, nothing plastic. It seems really easy to make. That would be nice to make, a pad that is portable, easy to pack, with snaps or a tie built in to roll up and go into the diaper bag.

I have given bibs made from a pattern at Sew Baby. They have sleeves and are for older babies, but they are always a hit! I used them here when the twins were little- they were a life saver for the "learning to feed yourself" stage.

I second the idea for cloth changing pads with a waterproof lining, perhaps. Also, we got a couple larger waterproof pads for our bed for nursing, nighttime diaper leaking, etc. We use them all the time.

I am tring out a plan for a new baby gift that was inspired by felt adven calendar wth little pockets and our crayon pouch craze here. I am going to use quilted fabric to sew a rectangle woith trim and handes on each end (so it can be folded in half and lain flat or carried). I nside I'm going to sew on strips of fabric and separate them into little pockets (my initial goalis 52--but we'll see what happens)...t tuck away a tiny item or little note for eac hweek of baby's first year. I' making one for some missionary friends who are having a baby in March and will be living in Grenada...it will be easy to pack up but a sweet memory of that time. When I actually get it going, I will let you guys know how it goes.

I like to give slings (handmade) or hand knitted or crocheted baby clothes.

Since we have had this discussion about home-made stockings, how about one of those as a hand-made gift idea. This time of year probably guaranteed not to be duplicated because Christmas is over and people aren't thinking about next year. Then it is one less thing for a mom to have to think about come baby's first Christmas.

My vote is for a homemade casserole the mom could tuck into her freezer for after the baby comes. Or coupons for a homemade meal to be delivered along with some pretty homemade place mats.

food is good

For winter babies I like the idea of a small tied fleece blanket (small enough to tuck into the infant car seat) with a matching hat.. you can do the tied fleece hat.. but you have to sew the fleece into a circle and maybe around the bottom of the hat.. the top is clipped into strips and two of the strips go around the others and tie to give the tassle look.

Also- if you could find a pattern for a shopping cart cover, that would be a great homemade gift!

I have started giving a gift to the "home for unwed mothers" (I don't know the official name for such a facility) in the name of the mother and baby-to-be.

Most of what the mothers I know are getting are fancy clothes and diaper genies and the like.....nice, but since they have well-stocked nurseries and layettes, I have decided to do this for mothers really in need.

Call me pushy, but it's my little effort against the materialism starting before birth.
