Hi,
Yes... I'd like to know if any one has a candy cane recipe or can point me in the right direction.
Two of my ds's can't have any artificial colours or flavours and all the candy canes that I can find have both! So I thought I'd be brave and try to do this.
I have purchased the natural ones before but I just can't seem to find them this year.
Thanks so much.

With my son we just wash the food coloring off. The small candy canes at least only have red "painted " on them. The big tub we got at Sam's uses pepermint oil and not artificial flavor. They are Bob's original mint candy canes. Annie

I saw a recipe in the Taste of Home cookie companion thing, for meringue based candy canes. You flavoured it with peppermint
Try this one Candy Cane Cookies

If you are a TOH Subscriber you can get these meringue canes:

from here.

If not, PM me.

Thanks Rachel and Annie,
I did find a candy cane recipe here:
http://www.joycesfinecooking.com/Recipes5/candy_cane_recipe. htm/

(I can't get it to link)

I'm hoping I can do this. I have a natural red colour ( beet root powder) so I will give it a try.

Magic Cabin had candy canes with no artificial flavor or color here

A bit pricey, but an option if you can't make them.

Trish, my youngest can't have artificial stuff either. I found beautiful candy canes at Whole Foods yesterday (mint or cherry). They are made by Hammond Candies. Hope that helps.

Hammonds is a local company. We have done the tour there several times. It's really interesting to watch this candy being made. Same old recipes that they have used since 1920's. It's great that they are still in business keeping there small old-time feel while carving out a respectable niche in the high end candy market. Their items are often featured in premier food magazines because they do still do things the old fashioned and natural way for the most part.

They are having a festival this weekend. We have never gone but my daughter saw on TV that you could make your own candy cane. It appears that priveledge costs $20/person so we'll have to decide if we really want to do that - that would be one expensive candy cane!

That sure would be a very expensive candy cane

I did order 12 of their natural candy canes. These will be a VERY special treat!
But I am still determined to go through with making some too. Hopefully they won't be too ugly.

Our new TORCH group just made candy canes this week for our St. Nicholas party. I was busy making cookies with the littles, but I saw parts of the process, and ds and all the other kids had a blast making them. We will definitely be doing this again. It took them a while to figure out that the more you pull them, the more opaque they get. They also had a "whoops" batch where something went wrong - no one knows what - and everyone decided that the resulting candy was the best batch of the day!      So, even if things go wrong, there is hope!

That's good to know!    Because there's bound to be a few disasters. As long as they taste good!

That sounds like a great activity for a group to do for a St. Nick party. Will have to remember that!

Tracy, do you know where they got the recipe? Sounds like it could be a really fun activity!

I think this is the link to Joyce's Candy Cane recipe -- that sure does sound good! She's got alot of great sounding, FREE recipes on her site. Thanks for mentioning this site.

Thanks Mary. I couldn't get it to link. But then I only tried 5 times.    Might have worked on the 6th.
