Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can anyone recommend a good online source for fabric, pillow stuffing, fleece and other sewing materials. Our local fabric store has closed and I do not want to drive miles to one. My dd is gearing up for her Christmas present making. We are also looking for purple fabric to make a tablecloth and napkins for Advent.

Thanks

Jo-anns will ship and I think they give the teacher discount for mail order too. And it's EASY to get free shipping -- just buy $35 worth!

Also, Fabric.com is a great resource! Your first order ships for $2.95 and there material and threads are priced very nicely.

Thanks Mary. How do I sign up for a discount at Joanns - do I have to go into a store? How much is it?

I'd email them and ask if you can do it online ... I got mine at the store, but a few years ago, when we were in SC there weren't any Joann's but I forget HOW I got the discount card sorry!

Mary G. you have saved literally my sanity and anxiety!!!!

My girls' group (I have 18 girls ages 10-13) are going to be making small fleece lovies (best way to describe them) for the EMS folks to have on their truck for those young patients who just need something to cuddle on their way to the hospital.

Well I have been behind on getting that fabric and was starting to panic and realizing no one around town was having a sale and on top of that the fabric places Google had been coming up with were too far away to get it to me (for certain) before next Friday (our next meeting). But woohoo...Fabric.com...woohoo! They are close, so I'll get everything next week, they have $2.95 shipping for your first order with them...woohoo!

My day is good...thanks Mary!!!

Oh and I didn't do this because I saved more money getting the $2.95 shipping (you can only do one discount/coupon per order)...BUT...now until 11/5 you can get 10-20% off each order.

Not only that KackyK -- there service is good, they're very helpful if you have to call them, and the fabric that I've gotten has been good!

Please post pix of what the girls make so we can learn too!

This sounds like a great project. Can you share how to make them - also how you get them to The EMS? Dd's Saint Elizabeth's would love to do this.

I personally have never done these, but some of the girls have done the bigger baby blanket versions. I'm just scaling it down. I hope to cut each yard into 4 panels of 14 inches X 18 inches. Each lovie will be two panels, back to back, the girls cut fringe 3 inches around and then knot each fringe piece.

I came up with idea because my theme for girls, Merciful Maidens (the club name), is compassion and how we can show it when taking care of ourselves and others. So applying our theme, in Sept we learned about babies, how to care for them (how moms care for them) and in Oct we went to the local prolife center with lots of donations the girls collected at Mass for pregnant moms who need help. Now in Nov, we are learning about emergencies, what do to when a brother cuts his arm, breaks a leg, gets a burn etc, how to take care of those types of situations. Then in Dec. we'll go to the Fire Squad to visit with EMS to find out what they do in emergencies, how do they show compassion each time out, how does one even become a paramedic. Our gift to them will be these lovies which we will have made at our Nov meeting. I was trying to think of something more than the cookies we are going to bring them too! I have found you can't give enough treats to the fire department!

Okay...so that was WAY more than you asked for...but there ya go! And I realized my post has nothing to do with the topic on where to find fabric...whoops!

I have actually bought fabric on ebay and it's' always been a positive experience for me. As long as your monitor does not distort colors badly, you can get a good idea what you are getting by the description and the pictures. You can get some really fun vintage fabrics that way, too.

Our local craft store (Jo Ann's) closed too...just after they made it into a huge monstrous sized box store as opposed to the shopping center version.

Now I just make a point of clustering errands in the parts of town where the craft stores remain, and try to anticipate what Im going to need for a few months each time I go.

It is probably a good thing that I dont have a craft store around the corner, though, Im kind of a fabric/yarn (as well as office supply) junkie.

My 2 favorite sources for fabric are:

http://wazoodle.com/

http://www.sewzannesfabrics.com/

The fabric at Sewzannes is very high quality. I find the cotton knits to be as good as older Land's End or even HannaAnderson. I made many of my dipes from her fabric, used them for over a year and they still looked in awesome condition. This is the fabric I chose for all my better projects for the kids, and most stuff I make for myself. Get on the mailing list, as about once a month they have a flat rate shipping special.

Wazoodle has great deals and a large selection, but not the fastest shipping.
