Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Sewn shut pockets, that is! Today Marianna undertook a little alteration of her britches as the useless pockets were driving her batty! It was really her first go with the seam ripper and she did a great job but does anyone know why they'd sew shut the pockets? I mean, I've bought some nice clothes (like Anne Taylor) before where things like pleats were lightly sewn down and you snipped a thread and pulled and presto - a swirly skirt! But kid pants' pockets deliberately sewn shut? What a waste of thread, material and time!

Any ideas as to the reasoning behind this?

Sounds like a mistake ... I thought it might have been done to lay flat when trying on, but your photo on the blog shows that it would still be "flappy" when on ....

I'm confused!

It's actually done on purpose. My mom used to work in a jeans factory when she was a teenager, and it was one of her jobs (that, and putting on belt loops).

With the pockets sewn shut, the pants (and men's suit coats) look more streamlined on the hanger and look better when you try them on (no gaping or drooping).

Thanks for the responses, Mary and Lori! Marianna is very pleased with her new usable pockets and was delighted to find that her sketchbook fit perfectly. With colored pencils in the cargo side pockets and that sketchbook, she's set!

Incidently, the boating girls on A Dock were hanging out one afternoon giving each other nicknames, there was "Twig" and "Callie" and "Pockets" guess which one was Marianna!!!
