hello ladies,
i just found out that my best friend from high school is expecting a baby girl in sept !! of course my first thought was "what can i knit for her?" sound familiar??  one complication, she lives in Orlando. booties, hats, even blankets will be not super "practical" there. though in air conditioning, they might still be needed. anyway, anyone have suggestions for a knitted (not too hard, still at the beginner/intermediate level here) gift for a baby in sunny FL?
I am thinking cotton would be good for the breathability factor. any good sources for good (but inexpensive) cotton yarn.

I live in Texas and we don't have a lot of cold or cool weather (minus our Easter snow storm!),but I always appreciate, and use, hats, booties, blankets with our babies. A September baby will still need a hat for the first few days until she regulates her own temperature. I use baby blankets regularly. Hats and booties are useful in the "winter months" of January and February. A blanket can be used on the floor for the baby to play on, too. A sweater can be more than useful on a cloudy windy day. Cotton bibs and burp cloths might be a nice gift and don't forget the teddy bears!
I have liked using Bernat's Cotton Tots yarn. Inexpensive and very soft. Nice color choices, too. It sheds a bit when you are working with it, but after it gets washed and dried it's very nice.
Wow.... all this talk of baby knitting! I have a baby gift due in just a few weeks! I'd better get started!

Monica -- I second the recommendation of Cotton Tots; another good one that's easily obtainable is TLC's Cotton Plus from South Carolina -- this makes great toys, blankets, little sweaters, etc.
You could do a set of cotton bibs; or the standard washclothes on the ball of Peaches n' Creme from Elmore-Pisgah (a NC company).
I've done little vests for babies too that make up so nice! And usuually only use a ball or two of the cotton blends -- the blends help for softness and stability. The pure cotton yarns (like Peaches) can be stiff or just not as soft, but are great for washclothes, burp rags, diapers, diaper covers, etc......

I third  the suggestions.
Peaches and Cream can be purschased very inexpensively from Wal MArt. And you can whip up toys, bibs, and blankets in no time. They are all begginner projects!

ok, as i was searching for ideas i found these ADORABLE mary jane booties
they really make me wish i had a girl. i happen to have a couple of odd balls of that peaches and cream yarn lying around. the pattern calls for cashmere. do you think peaches and creme would work. i also have plenty of cheapo acrylic  that i could use could i substitute either of them for the cashmere? can you tell i dont know much about this?

Monica the yarn you use makes a HUGE difference in the end product. There are places on line where you can buy a skein or two of fine yarn, that won't break the bank. For these Mary JAnes you don't need alot of yarn, I would try to get the better yarn.
Do you have any local yarn shops? Often they will have sale baskets of misc. skiens, since you need so little perhaps you will find what you need.

Monica,
I agree with "Peacock" -- peaches would be too stiff for these. If you want to go with an inexpensive cotton blend, than try the Cotton Plus -- but knit a swatch first to determine whether to chance the needles/stitch count....they should work fine in the Cotton Plus.
I wouldn't make bootties for a baby in the cashmere -- unless they were christening booties that would be saved as an heirloom; you could make a couple of pairs in the cotton plus for what LB wants for their cashmere!
