Dear Friends,

I am looking for advice in dealing with my pregnancy-realated anemia. I am 27 wks. along, and feeling a bit weak and breathless, plus am having some heart palpitations. The obgyn has put me on double iron (prenatal vitamin plus slow Fe) and, of course, this upsets my tummy!   

I have to keep energy up (like all of you, I know!), as I have four children at home homeschooling!

Any suggestions are much appreciated!

I've only got a sec, but here are a few things that have worked for me. Iron rich foods of course. Black strap molasses, apricots, cooking in cast iron, esp. acidic foods. Increase vit. C and B (a B complex is good) Nettles, RR leaf, Dandelion, and yellow dock.

I've had lots of problems with this (actually tood triple iron supplements!)...here's what I can come up with in just a few minutes:

Prune juice. Yeah, I know But it has more iron per serving than liver! I used a straw (and holding my nose) to get it down... But it does help counteract the uncomfortable side effects of the iron!

Red meat! Steak for mom - just tell dh and the kids it's for medicinal purposes! Actually, even tuna is a good source of iron.

Seriously, combine a good iron source, like red meat, or spinach with a Vit. C. Take your iron supplements with OJ, and if they bother your stomach, take 1 in the morning, one at night. Iron + oj in the am, iron + prune juice in the evening.

If you eat a burger, or sliced beef, top with a tomato slice and spinach. If you're concerned about calories, just skip the roll. Think spinach salad with grilled beef on it. Yum!

Like Lisa said, cook in cast iron. The iron will leach into the foods. Just make sure your iron pot is safe.


BTW, I learned most of this from the Red Cross when I had to make a blood donation during one of my pregnancies. If you call them, they should have paperwork they can send you on how to build your iron supply from food sources.

Oh, and it takes about 2 weeks before you'll feel the effects of the increased iron in your system, whether from food or pills. So hang in there...

a food based iron supplement will work better and be easier on your body.. you can get a supplement (they have a liquid one you can get at health food stores) or you can try alfalfa tablets.. I take these they're fairly inexpensive and will also help with milk supply after baby is born.

Dear Renee - I used to have lots and lots of problems with pregnancy anemia - until last pregnancy. I started having a couple of tablespoons of organic blackstrap molasses a day (I take it in tea) - I did not even have to take an iron supplement - which is great as iron makes me sick.

You could also have a pint of Guiness a day - recommended in Ireland

I take Floradix Iron plus Herbs
It's liquid Iron -- I take it instead of the pills. It tastes pretty good actually and doesn't bother my stomach or make me gag or anything yucky like that.
