Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. I was reading that olive oil and coconut oil are natural remedies for dry knees and elbows and I got to wondering... where would I find coconut oil? Is it an essential oil? Would they carry it in the cooking section of a regular grocery store or do I need to go to a specialty store? I imagine that it smells nicer than olive oil. Thanks in advance!

I find that Green Pastures sells a very high quality CO for a reasonable price.

Unfortunately like all "health" products, quality does matter. Perhaps Whole Foods would have some good quality brand (I haven't looked) but I would question CO coming from a regular grocery.

My local Publix carries the Spectrum brand which is a very good brand. I buy the Spectrum brand coconut oil.

Is Publix like an Albertsons or a Tom Thumb? I don't think we have any Publix here. We do have a Whole Foods.

Yes, Publix is like Albertsons. If you have a Whole Foods you'd be sure to find the Spectrum brand there as well as a variety of other brands.

Would I look for it in the cooking section or in the body care section?

Our favorite brand is Tropical Traditions - check out their website. I used to belong to a coop that got it very cheaply. Second favorite is Nutiva - I buy it online from Vitacost with all my vitamins, toothpaste, bath products etc

in case you need one more suggestion:

wilderness family naturals

i'm not going to go into details because i don't know that much about it, but our local farmers here have been talking about this homeschooling family getting fined $100,000 by the fda for linking to health studies, so they could use some help.

Goodness Stef that seems real harsh. Matilda we have gotten our coconut oil from Walmart. I get real bad cracks in my fingers and on the heals and would use the solidified coconut oil... just recently I started using Melaleuca's Renew Intensive Skin Therapy cream and it has worked wonders.

Just a thought.

I guess I didn't think about it being solidified. Since it was lumped together with olive oil, I just assumed it was a liquid. Can you buy solidified coconut oil without anything else added to it?

All coconut oil is solid looking - it resembles Crisco shortening. It's white, but if heated it will liquify easily. It doesn't need much heat either! I was keeping mine in a cupboard, but apparently in the summer here the cupboard gets too warm and the coconut oil turned liquid (once liquid it is clear-ish). In the winter, it stays solid in the cabinet.

By the way, coconut oil is great for popping popcorn!!!

Does it make the popcorn taste like coconut?

Nope! It's not something that would stand out really. But, since coconut oil can stand the high heat application of popping popcorn it's a great choice.

And...I did use it last year on Katie's dry cheeks too!

My kids can always taste coconut oil - even in baked goods - but they don't really mind it.

Just a thing about dry skin - oils such as coconut and olive do not really help very severe dry skin as they do not penetrate well - just stay on the surface. They are not bad - just do not work for real severe cases. And our experience is that they are ineffective for eczema. But great for maintenance of normal skin.

Melaluca's Renew worked great for my daughter's dry skin - we used it for years.
