Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hey ladies,
I was hoping some of you could give me an idea of how long mastitis will take to clear up.

I went down hard with it on Monday. I quickly called my OB and asked for antibiotics (I had a very high fever, sever pain in all my joints and lymph nodes, awful chills and a breast that was red, swollen, and HURT!). I got on the antibiotics on Monday evening (ceflex? ) and I am still struggling with a low grade fever, my breast hurts (though not as bad when I first got sick and tried to nurse). I am worried because my milk ducts, on the one side, are hard and swollen. I feel like the baby isn't getting the bad ducts expressed even when his chin is pointed in that direction and I massage it and uses warm compresses, a breast pump.....

I have read all the suggestions here and at Kelly Mom and I wonder if I'm just not being patient enough?

Uugg! I just don't want to end up having those ducts drained by the Dr.

Any thoughts or should I move heaven and earth to disperse my children the 4 corners of the earth so I can go to the Dr.

Thanks,
Alison

Alison,
Have you been really and truly resting? You need feet up and lots of rest and lots of fluids. You need constant compresses as well. Have you tried the homeopathic Phytolacca deCanga? This always helps me kick mastitis out quickly.

You shouldn't still be sick. So, if you have been a good patient , you might need to check in with your doctor again. I know we moms are usually lousy patients!

Alison, I recommend that homeopathic remedy also. But I also had the same problem with the antibiotic taking effect. I think they give it 5 or 6 days to really shake the whole thing. When I've called at day 4 they always told me give it 2 more days.

I would call tomorrow with concerns, since you'll be going into the weekend.

I would call, too, Alison. But I always dose myself with 800 mg of ibuprofen at the first sign of breast duct soreness...this has staved off many a breast infection and has cleared up my plugged ducts as long as I rest and drink water...It also helps with the pain, of course.

I have other friends who are nursing veterans, too, and they swear by it.

Prayers for you!

Thanks ladies! Your advise was really helpful. I finally got better late Thursday my temp. came down to normal. The pain and swelling were still there, but I used the 800mg ibuprofen and the constant heat to get it under control.

I am sorry I didn't get this out sooner but between thunder storms and children, my turn on the computer has been limited.

We really need to put all this great advise on mastitis in a file. It would really be helpful.

Thanks again

Alison
