I am fairly certain that I have an impacted wisdom tooth. I had thought that the tooth was just coming in- but my jaw has become increasingly sore over the past week or two and is now becoming painful.

My dentist referred me for removal about a year ago, but at the time my dh also needed his done, and we couldn't afford to be paying for both. His was more needed at the time, so his got done. Then when I found out I was pregnant, I just figured I would wait until sometime after baby came to have mine removed.

I am not sure what I should do, now. I will have to talk to my midwife and dentist, but I am wondering if any of you have had to consider dental surgery during pregnancy? I am about 29 weeks along, and would like to not have it done during pregnancy, but I also can't imagine getting it done while having a newborn.

I had a root canal late 1st trimester/early 2nd trimester. My boy is now 2 months old & perfectly beautiful & chubby, despite all my worries.

My understanding is that you cannot be completely "knocked out" while pregnant, only numbed.

I had some pretty intensive dental surgery (root canal, crown lengthening, tooth extraction) done while pregnant - late 1st trimester and into 2nd trimester. Lydia is just fine.

The only problem I had was that my dentist didn't believe in providing pain killers to pregnant women. I had to go to my OB for a painkillers (and I really needed them!)

I had all four wisdom teeth extracted shortly after my son was born.I stopped taking the pain med that the dentist perscribed because I was afraid to take it while nursing.He assured me that it was safe,but I just offered the pain to God.

Thanks, everybody!

I was gone all day today, so I wasn't able to make any phone calls. It will have to wait until Monday. From what little research I have done online, the biggest problem with oral surgery during the 3rd trimester is being on your back for an extended period of time during the surgery. Ugh. Of course, recovery is probably more difficult while caring for a newborn than while pregnant. I just don't want to do anything that might put the babe at risk, either before birth, or after. The older kids are fine with dad or grandma & grandpa.

I was nursing when I was originally referred for the surgery, and my ped said that there were no problems with the anesthetic/ pain killers.
