My sister is studying to be a Montessori teacher and so we're having lots of fun discussions about it. It is making me question everything about my parenting

. I have a couple of requests for you ladies. My sister is researching how Montessori philosophy is supported by Catholic teachings. She is looking for writings from encyclicals or doctors of the Church ~not educators~ that talk about the education of children. I'm clueless so I thought I'd ask here.

Also, are there any books written about parenting from a Montessori perspective. There is so much interesting stuff about freedom, obedience and discipline, there must be some good parenting information somewhere.

Pope Pius XI wrote the encyclical, On Christian Education. The Catechism of the Catholic Church also contains some information about the education of children. Fr. Hardon, S.J. spoke on this subject often.

The Hidden Hinge is an older Montessori/parenting book.

I wish I could find the sources for you right now, but I just can't (my bedroom/library is a DISASTER right now - and that is an understatement!).

I do know the sort of topics she is looking for though are going to be things along these lines:
*being made in the image and likeness of God, each of us (including children) have an inherent (ontological) dignity, worthy of respect
*It is the Christian faith that supports the importance of children - value of children, "curse" of barrenness, we celebrate the conception and birth of our Savior where many (not all) other faiths do not, etc.
*On the Education of Children might be a place to start - that children should be taught certain truths, not to be held back from them

Keeping in mind, in the grand scheme of things, the Montessori method is very new. The methodology is new, but the inherent principles are not: dignity, respect, etc.

Try reading some of the more specifically religious Montessori books, then look to their topics and sources of information - this will help guide to which Church teachings you/she are seeking.
