Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

How do you feel about all the inclusion of creation stories of different cultures at a young age? or the other stories that (at least inthe book I read) are compared to Bible stories? The idea seems interesting, but I don't know that I am comfortable with the comparing at a young age...How do you deal with that since it seems to be intergrated in the program?

We are very open about other faiths in our house. We are always talking about different ways of looking at things, while still focusing on our own faith. I think that a wide world view is important in helping my children understand the world. Not everyone is Catholic and not everyone is going to believe the things that we do. My husband's parents are Christian Scientists, my brother is a Unitarian Universalist minister and his wife is a Buddhist! This makes for interesting conversations! For us, around 5 years is when they start noticing differences and wanting answers, but we obviously have an extreme religious situation in our family. We do a lot of comparing and contrasting, always going back to our own faith as the base. I don't know if that helps or not. Every family is different and has to make their own choices.

Blessings,
Betsie

I don't really feel comfortable going into other creation stories until the kids are older- I think with children in their formative years (8 and under or so), they are still so black/white in their thinking, it's best to keep things really simple and straightforward. My kids know there are other faiths (our next door neighbors are mormon, etc), but we teach them only what is faithful to the Church. I figure that when they are older and are strongly rooted in their fatih, we can approach other belief systems. We'll sidestep other creation stories until then.

We are using Waldorf loosely in our house. It is going very well. I make up my own curriculum so I pick and choose what I want to put into our year.

Next school year, my dd will be 9. According to Waldorf, she will be in Gr. 3, so we will be doing Bible History during this time. We will also be learning a little about the Jewish culture and customs as well as learning about the Hebrews. The rest of it will come from the Bible. We will also be learning about life around the world: biomes, how people live in different countries. There will also be a lot of hands on activities to accommodate the 9 yr. change.

Before Grade 3, I do not really deal with other Creation stories. We follow the rhythm as Donna listed above. The first time we deal with other cultures is in Gr. 3.

Blessings,
Julia

We have discussed other religions and read myths. We just have never discussed them in a comparing way. The book I read compared creation stories and flood stories with Noah, ect. Thanks all for your opinions. Donnalynn, thanks for the info. about the OT stories having been what was used before.
