Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have always been a bunch of book geeks, living partially in middle earth. We are not athletically talented. (Except DH.) I decided that this year we would not do organized sports, our lives would be complete without it. I was fortified, ready to stand strong.

They begged and pleaded for soccer. My mom said they would be late bloomers in sports. My DH said they should play. OK.   I signed 'em up.

All of a sudden there is a little skill there. They talk about sports. My oldest organized the younger boys to teach them football tonight. The older boys go running because the coaches said to!

I'm not ready to be sports mom! How did this happen?   Even the two year old can throw a mean spiral and dribble a soccer ball. This is just so not us.

After having read Kid Fitness by Dr. Kenneth Cooper, I am not surprised by your post. Apparently, there is a range of blooming re: sports and fitness abilities.

How great that your children are experiencing successes in sports and fitness skills!

I guess I do need to read a little here.   I honestly did not realize they could blossem late. I just assumed it was not part of their makeup.

In the past they have played some but there has been little interest or skill. All of a sudden the two oldest are very motivated. The two younger boys always showed more natural aptitude. So I'm sure if their older brothers are active in sports the youngers will follow suit.

Story of my life. The children are always moving into another phase before I adjusted to the last one.

It's all good.

Bridget - that is awesome. Your younger ones - whom you say have more natural ability - will bloom under the play and direction of their brothers. While some of my boys are natural athletes anyway those that struggle move along more quickly than other peoples children because they have so many older brothers. Due to the fact thgat there are so many boys they play mostly sports. This helps them to develop as athletes. It is also true that every kids develops at their own rate. Ben was the one I thought would never be our athlete. I worried about him this year in baseball because I wasn't sure he was cut out for it like the other boys. He sure did surprise us!! He is a great baseball player - one of the best on his teaam this past year -and listens well to the coaches which helps a lot. Although he naturally tends to still want to stay inside and read he does try more things now and want to play outside with his brothers.

Enjoy your new sporting world, Bridget

We have to opposite problem here. We all love sports and so do my three boys. They want to play everything, and are pretty good at most of what they try. So, I have to always limit them.....

When my first child was three he would beg for me to "throw pitches" to him starting at 6:30 AM in the morning. I would often comply by 7 or so......till one of the neighbors, very seriously I might add, told me that I was going to burn this child out if I kept up this pace! Like it was MY idea to drag out all the baseball stuff out at 7 each morning and play...oh well!

Last year for "school" my then 5 and 4 year old had a year of Physical Education. We played as many sports as possible...all to try and get a good nap time in!!!

Anyway, I don't think this really helped you at all. But, it was fun musing about our sporting adventures over the past few years....so thanks!!
