There isn't a lot out there, but I have found enough to at least make me believe I'm not crazy. Also, my OB confirmed this before I even asked. Nursing throws you into a menopausal state immediately. Your estrogen drops and they can't give you any because your milk will dry up.
I've just thought these past years that I've been foul and depressed. No, I think it's caused by nursing. Yes, I am foul and depressed. I had weaned number 5 when she was close to three and had a few months of feeling really good when I wan't nursing or pregnant. I attributed it at the time to a better diet. Then I was pregnant and still felt good, again I thought it was diet related. I was so good I handled a cross country move while 5-7 months pregnant! This included selling our house in TX and finding a new one in GA.
Within hours of giving birth the depression just washed over me. I came home and sat down to nurse one time and just started crying for no reason. It took a few weeks before I decided it really had to do with the nursing. I'm better, I don't just cry for no reason all the time now, but I know it affects me. I don't want to do anything, nothing sounds fun, I think everything in my life stinks and I'm completely overwhelmed.
Today I took the kids out to an theater audition for my oldest. We were on the cute little square downtown and all I could do was look at the people by themselves, dressed nicely, eating lunch on a park bench and wish I was one of them. I know this isn't how I really feel, but feeling this way makes me wonder what on earth I've done to myself?! Homeschooling 6 kids!!!
So I want to keep nursing, but not for three years. What should I do, would anything help? Anyone else have this? It seems to fall into two camps, depressed the entire time nursing or depressed for a little while when weaning. Wish I was the other way.

I don't know what you could do specifically for this, though, I imagine natural remedies for perimenopause might help.
I don't think it is *normal* to be depressed because of nursing, but I think that this long, miserable state of perimenopause that so many women today seem to go through is unnatural as well. I think there must be something underlying that exacerbates the effects of these events, but I don't know what they are.

Vitamin C and B-complex.. I've found that those two things are like the top of what you should take to help your adrenals function properly
AND that if your thyroid function is good and your adrenal function is good, you are unlikely to have much in the way of menopausal symptoms...
Which leads me to think it might help you.

It's not completely abnormal for moms to go through phases of hypothyroidism after or during a pregnancy. One of the symptoms is constant feeling of fatigue and just "blah" or even feeling kind of depressed. Which made it really difficult for me to decipher ... am I feeling run down and icky because there's something wrong, or because I'm constantly pregnant, nursing, or juggling life with lots of littles?! It did turn out to be Hashimoto's (hypothyroid), and I do feel better now that I'm treated for it. Though not 100%. But...well, here I am pregnant again. So that could just be hormones.
But I will say that I think I tend to be pretty sensitive to the swinging hormones, whether it's just my cycle or if it's pregnancy/delivery related. It doesn't take much for me to feel off. Maybe some of us are more prone to that than others.
Oh, and Vitamin D. That's another thing my doctor found I was lacking when they ran a panel testing for thyroid function and a slew of other things that could've explained how I was feeling. I live in NY with long winters, though. I see you live in TX. But maybe you're not able to get outside as much because of the extreme heat? Just brainstorming.
