Anyone have a dh or know someone who had a dh enter Med School...ummm...later in life? Anyone have any success stories, horror stories, or illuminating anecdotes about how this works in a homeschooling family with several children?

Oh, boy I know exactly what you are going through ( I think).

My dh was all set to enter med school when we married (later in life with 3 kids already between us)and we pondered our prospects long and hard. Although the temptation was great and many times we questioned our decision, we ultimately decided that he would not follow that path. It would just have been too hard on our newly formed family. So he went to nursing school instead and now has a fine career as a flight nurse.
I cannot say there have been no regrets, but I can say that our family is fine and that is what is important.

My husband and I went through med school with children. We were not homeschooling, obviously. There were other families - mostly LDS - that had several children and homeschooled. Our med school had a bigger number of married students and older students than most med schools.   I am sure it was tough, but they did it.

We were in the Army so we got a paycheck while we were in school. O/w, unless you had huge savings or a benefactor, I don't know how you would do it.   

Also, the time factor. Med school was time consuming. Internship was much worse. Residency was better because we picked "lifestyle friendly" specialties. Not surgery or OB, for example.

Would we do it again? I wouldn't. I missed too much of my older ones babyhoods. But looking back, if it was just my husband it would have been quite doable. We graduated with three children and had two more by the time residency was over.

I think so much depends on your support system, your motivation, your finances, etc. The military or PHS option makes the finances easier. But, there are other sacrifices you need to make then. It could be something worth doing - we need good Catholic doctors. Or there are other options - like Theresa mentioned. If I had to do it again, I would probably have become a nurse practitioner.

I worked in a family practice in a large teaching hospital one resident was a former Spanish teacher and the other was a priest How is that for a dual career. I know several residents married with children so yes it vcan be done. I think the perspective given by older students is great. Has your dh thought about being a PA? Annie

Feel free to PM me, I married a youth minister who had no intention of going to college....then started and didn't stop. Today he is a pro-life Family Practitioner. Our first son was born the day before med school started...our 7th child is due in December. We always homeschooled and have a lot of loans but it is doable.
