Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

For those of you familiar with parenting expert John Rosemond . . . what do you think about his parenting advice?

For me and my family, his discipline and parenting style and suggestions as a whole do not fit.

It's been way to long since I read the one book I had by him.. and I don't have the book anymore.

But one thing that stuck with me from that book was this..

Bedtime is for parents.

Meaning of course that you can put the kids to bed at a time that works for you as the parents to have time in the evenings to spend time together. And that the children don't necessarily have to go to sleep at that bedtime.

I love it. My kids have a bedtime that is a different time than lights out. They're usually able to play quietly on their beds or read/look at books.. they tend to wind down and lights out goes better and dh and I have time to spend together before one or both of us are falling asleep.

my mom is constantly cutting out newspaper columns by dr. rosemond & sending them to me! especially the ones that argue against co-sleeping, which she hates that we do. Of course some of his ideas are good ones, as much as he writes, he's gotta get some things right, but what i always think when I read him is:

this guy only had 2 kids. he's old. I've had 4 kids and I'm a mom.

I trust myself more. :)

I like most of what I have read from him.

I agree with him far more than I disagree with him. I like the fact that he really seems to respect the headship of parents and support us in our roles as primary educators of our own children.

If you are seeking out parenting advice, I would recommend you read some of Dr. Ray Guarendi's books or possibly listen to some of his talks. He is hysterical and very down to earth...as for experience...10 children. (all by adoption, I believe!) Need I say more?

I'll second this. We use the "take what you like and forget the rest" method with John Rosemond, but we have liked a lot of what we've read by him. We've just gotten introduced to Dr. Ray and are enjoying him also, but the things we've seen don't address specific behaviors.
