Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dd12 is a self-taught piano player. She plays constantly, printing off new pieces of music from the internet. She is fiercely independent and insistent upon teaching herself.

I would like to get her a gift, though, that shows our encouragement for all of her hardwork. Any ideas?

I know it's not as much fun.. but.. since she's so independent about teaching herself the music..

What about a gift certificate for new music from somewhere? something that she can't get off the internet perhaps? something that she maybe has wanted, a particular piece or type of music that she'd love to have.. but give her the gift certificate so that she can pick which it is she wants at this time.

Or, hmmm, does the piano itself need work? could stand a tuning or such? I'm sure that's not cheap.. but it wold probably be greatly appreciated if it's "off" a bit.

Jodie echoed my suggestions. I thought of the tuning first thing. What kind of music does she like to play? I always enjoyed finding songbook collections of favorite musicals, old fashioned songs, etc. Used music books are a lot of fun to go through. My grandmother used to do estate sales and send some cool songbooks from the sales. I still use them.

My mother once gave us labels "From the Music Collection of _____ _____" that had piano keys on it. I put it on all my music.

How does she store or keep this music she prints off? A nice music bag, a nice binder to keep the pages organized.

Some whimsical musical jewelry is fun. A scarf pin in the shape of note? Earrings?

How about methodology books that would help her learn further?

And how about recordings of piano artists? Classical musicians? My mother bought me Van Cliburn recordings when I was your daughter's age.

She likes classical. She has sheet music everywhere! So, a binder would be a good idea. I was planning on getting it tuned, anyway. I was thinking of getting her a collection of CDs.

Our last payment on it is Jan 1st, so dh says to tell her she gets a piano for Christmas! Maybe I should put a big bow on it!

Thanks for the ideas!

On that binder thought. All photocopied music I've used I put in clear plastic sleeves that have 3 hole to put in binders. Makes the pages stand up easier, keeps them together (you can slip more than one sheet inside) and organized.

Oh, and some nice Christmas piano music books are nice to receive as gifts. A fun book is the OOP The Trapp Family Book of Christmas Songs which she might enjoy. It's always great to have a variety of Christmas carols, old and new.
