Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have never heard this one before!

I had to take Sammy to the ped last week because of an eczema flare up in his little ear canal. Our regular ped. is nearing retirement so she has hired a young new doctor to work into taking her place. We have seen the same ped for 13 years now and while I've not been estatic with her, we have a decent amiable rapor. This was the first time we saw the new dr. (they are both Hindu women.)

So she comes in, and before she even looks at Sam she shakes my hand and says "So, can you tell me what your background is?" I'm a bit puzzled by this, "I'm sorry, what do you mean by my background?" She askes, "Amish, Mennonite, Mormon?" "Oh", I say, "None of those, we are Catholic." So, a bit more of the usual big family bantor, then onto checking Sam's ears.

Sam and I leave and while we are paying our co-pay and such, I over hear this coversation between the Dr. and nurse:

Nurse: Yes, she has 9 children and she homeschools them all, they don't do antibiotics, immunizations, and they have all been born at home!

Doctor: Do they do blood transfusions?

Nurse: I didn't think they were JW!

Doctor: No, she said they were Catholic.

Nurse: JW are the ones who don't do blood transfusions.

Doctor: Oh, so birth control is to Catholics what blood transfusions are to JW.

Weird huh?   For other reasons we are looking for a new ped now, but this just encourages me to look a little harder and quicker!

I've never really shopped around for a ped before, any suggestions on what to ask when I start calling around?

If you don't do immunizations, I would check into that. It's usually the thing that either indicates a general relaxed attitude towards "alternative" health ideas or that will get you kicked out of the practice when they find out.

Well, it's weird.. but if you knew nothing about all these groups and were trying to sort it out in your mind.. it seems reasonable..

after all blood transfusions are NOT NEGOTIABLE with JW.. so that actually gives her a much better stance than so many docs that think..

Of course, then she'll run into people who claim to be Catholics that ask for BC and the poor woman will be confused all over again

I had a new one the other day too, Lisa. Bill was asked my background...because obviously an American woman wouldn't have a pile of kids.

We've never gotten to pick our own ped. Sorry I can't help with that.

When we moved, I asked our beloved pediatrician how to find a new Dr. in our new town. He said to ask some nurses where they take their kids. He thought they were a good judge of a Dr.. It did work for us, too; we've got a new ped. that we really like.

I would check with a local midwife or LLL or other similar type groups. They seem to keep mental lists of who are good peds. especially if you are choosing not to vaccinate.

with LLL they may not tell you anything since I don't believe officially LLL can. But if you could get to a meeting.. before and after when it's "unofficial" you can probably get some info from people.

we have always been blessed to have homeschool ped's. One was Catholic and a dad of 8, our current one is Christian who displays NFP literature in all his rooms (he actually is internal medicine/peds) and "only " has four but often comments that he wishes he had more! Many of us are "working on him" to have a conversion!
Can you ask at your local Catholic homeschool group?
PS, I have NEVER had comments from either office about no immunizations/delayed immunizations, etc. that would be a pain!

Lisa - I know those comments (and I have 5 compared to your 9) - but from my doctors. Every doctor I have seen in the last few months (dermatologist, opthamologist, internist) has "blamed" my allergies, eyes and eczema on the fact that I have "so many children" and the fact I homeschool - it really frustrates me as I feel that they are not really making an effort or taking me seriously. The comments I get are "this is all stress - I have one child and I can't wait to get to work" "do you ever have adult company" "why don't you send them to school and you will see all your problems go away" "surely Catholics can use birth control" etc etc I have stopped trying to explain that I am not stressed except for the fact that I have not felt well. The world (and unfortunately many Catholics too) see things very differently. When I was very poorly I even had someone say "well I hope you have learned your lesson and will stop having kids now" I do not know how they cannot see the 5 beautiful blessings with me and think "wow this is so worth it"

Yes, that's it you must be allergic to your children and homeschooling. Such ridiculous statements!

Wow, talk about stero-typing.

I guess each religion/denomination is known for one outstanding feature that puzzles other people.

I guess your doctor doesn't get out much. Well, if she does, they are not discussing religious topics.

When I had two kids, the doc blamed some mild anemia on the fact that I had two kids and the stress.

I started crying right there in her office and just said, "No, it's not the kids."

Over Christmas, I ran into an acquaintance who marveled at me staying home with my children. I simply replied, "Well, they're supposed to be the people I love most in the world. Why wouldn't I want to stay home with them?"

I said it very sweetly and there was no hint or intent of anything in the question except just the question.

Hopefully, it got her thinking -
