Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Any baby clothes made in America? Or at least not in China?

I got some Osh Kosh clothes made in Thailand and Vietnam, recently.

Nope!    I called over the weekend and randomly selected 10 items. 8 out of 10 were made in China. The tights are made in Lithuania and the playdress/leggings are made in Peru.

The best baby clothes I *ever* received came from England (my mom is British...I have lots of relatives there). The cotton is gorgeous and way softer than what is common here.

I got to actually get out this evening for a little while and went to Kohls looking for some baby clothes. There was ONE item in the entire baby department not made in China.

I gave up. I left. I am not sure what I will do now. But even if it wasn't a matter of principal, it is still potentially a matter of safety since there have even been recalls on bibs made in China.

I did get to stop in a consignment shop. At least anything Chinese-made that I get there won't send more money to China.

So, how do I get those English baby clothes?

Got me. My relatives think I have all I need now and don't send them anymore. I wore them out on the third baby, I think. They were so so soft! It wasn't that they were embellished or fancy at all. Just basic onesies and sleepers and the like, but the flannel just washed up softer each time and never pilled, and the cotton footed sleepers made me want to cuddle up with them as a pillow!

We have a few UK members here. Maybe you could work out a deal? And if you do...let me know! I may try to work one out too!

How about Zutano?? Or Sweet Potatoes?? You might have to go to a boutique type baby store, and discreetly look at labels. Then, but them on ebaby!
I'd say about 50% of my Hanna's are not made in China, but then I have a hodge podge of older and newer stuff...
Maybe used is the way to go all around. Maria has 50% more clothes than the boys had, (I can't help myself!!) but I honestly can say at least 80% of it was bought used...

check out bodenusa.com
I think their baby clothes and kids clothes are adorable- with that British style!! In the FAQ's they speak of fair trade/labor and most of their clothes are not made in the Far East....
You can find Boden on e bay too.

As far as I know, Petit Bateau is made in France. The baby clothes are beautiful and classic. For bigger kids I like the pajamas and underclothes.

Petit Bateau

Käthe Kruse does not only make beautiful dolls and Waldorf toys. They also make children's clothing - made in Germany. I couldn't find an american site with KK clothing, so maybe they are not available in the US.

At a local baby shop I asked the owner why the Steiff and Sigikid stuffed animals are more expensive than Sterntaler(for example). He answered, Steiff and Sigikid are made in Germany where the workers earn more money. The other is made in China.

I would be happy to help anyone who wants clothes posting out. Just PM me if I can help.
Book, where is your mum from? I am in Lancashire (the NW)
I love Boden, & buy quite a lot. It was always from the UK & Ireland, however, I bought something this time, which was from somewhere obscure (forget where)

I wish I knew where those old clothes came from. I'll ask my mom the next time we talk...she probably knows where they are likely to shop. I am sure they weren't from any fancy boutique or anything like that.

I just got a huge package of kids clothes from Old Navy. I got a pretty wide variety of stuff and the only things made in China were the pajamas and the one onesie (these things were also the "cheapest" feeling items in the package). Everything else was made in Indonesia, Vietnam, India, Turkey or Egypt.

So, nothing in America, and maybe they were all made in terrible conditions, too, but for those of you really committed to not buying from China, Old Navy has good sale prices!

God Bless,

Susan

Try going to a kids clothing consignment shop and start looking at tags...I have some Lands End, Gymboree and OshKosh that were made in the U.S.A.

I have lots of OshKosh, Carters, Children's Place, etc that were made in countries like Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam. I've also noticed lots of tags from Taiwan, Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Macau, Honduras, El Salvador, etc on our clothes since I started paying attention.

I remember a post over at Regina Doman's "House Art Journal" that talked about buying clothing blanks from Dharma Trading Co.. They list where their clothes were made. You can dye / decorate them yourself. Very few U.S.A. for infant, though. Another option is to search the internet for WAHMs who sew baby clothes, though you'll never know where the raw materials came from...but it's that way for a lot of things.

Pardon my inquiry: Is the reason for not wanting to buy clothes made in China due to the slave labour? That's a main reason I avoid Wal-Mart....

Molly,

You read my mind! I get so upset when I go to a store to buy children's clothing and everything is made in China! I went to the Carter's outlet to look at some clothes for my 9 week old dd and ended up just walking out because it seemed as if everything I picked up was "made in China". I have a particularly hard time buying things for my 3 dd's, knowing how baby girls are treated there. Frankly, I cannot believe that the only option left for us is to farm out every last industry to The People's Republic of China.

Stephanie,

I don't mean to pick on you, but I can't believe that one romper is 58.95!!!! I loved the link and the clothes--esp. the expensive romper. I am having a hard time outfitting my little guy this fall. I want soft knits and everything out there is scaled down little boy clothes in baby sizes. Am I the only one who doesn't want to put an 8 month old in jeans and a button down shirt? I mean, really....

And I was headed out to the Carter's outlet but will think twice, I can't believe all their clothes are made in China--how awful...
