Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

How do you all manage to play games with your kids? My dd5 wanted to play Scrabble Jr. today. I decided to give it a try, which I don't normally do. Ds9 joined in. The baby was cooperating, but NOT my ds3! He was awful, demanding attention, interfering with the board. I tried mightily to get him involved in a controlled way (being in charge of my letters). He ended up ruining the game for everyone. He just wants to be right in the middle of it.
Sometimes DH and I will keep ds9 up a bit later to play a game, but I really don't want to start doing that with dd5.
This issue isn't even confined to board games, but any activity that doesn't directly involve my 3yo. He wants to do what the 'big' kids do, and isn't happy with substitutes. It makes it difficult to have more age-appropriate things for the olders when the 3yo is being so demanding.
Does this even make sense? I was beside myself this afternoon, and I know there's a better way to do this. I'm just not seeing it. Help!

In our house, any beginning signs of such behavior gets them banned from the game and the room entirely while we continue it. If they are frustrated because the game is a bit too hard, then we'll let a little one pair up with someone or lean over and get a some advice. But the fit throwing isn't allowed at all. It does not take long at all for them to catch on that they better cut it out if they want to be in on things. As young as 2 yrs old can grasp this in my house. We don't expect them to act like a big kids, but they are not given a chance to ruin the game for everyone.

I have found this only works if I nip it the second I start to see the "signs" of impending doom.    The eyes and hand motions are a dead give-away for mine, and that's when I remind them of the rule to help them gain some control. Once they are in a fit, there's no point talking, I just take them to their bed and tell them they can come out when they are over it and ready to be nice.

with a two and half yr old, we try to play certain games when she is napping, or in bed for the night.

but we do have some that she can join in on, or get a couple going at the sam time. we then rotate people into the 'older' game and back to helping baby play her games...

or dh will play with the kids whil eI play with baby.

it is a challenge. lol
