Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am looking for help with history. I will just state that I need a very straight forward type of history. This is the one subject I just don't comprehend or know what to do with.
I need something that says this is the books you need read them in this order. I am not looking for a program that incorporates other subjects as that's not necessary. I have children who love the CM approach and will read like crazy. They just need good books that keep them wanting more.
Can anyone post what they have used and how they liked it. I do know that doing some type of US history along side government would be a good fit. But that's the end to my history knowledge.
HELP Please! Misty

Went in on 2/8 to edit. I would really like some help making a plan for high school US and World History. I would like to use living books and it can span over 10th-11th grade to make our 2 history credits. Any help would be great.
I noted below about using the SCM book list, but after looking around I have found so many books that spark my interest from sites, other booklists and suggestions I just don't know how to put something together. I am getting overwhelmed basically. Thanks for your patience and help.

Misty, have you tried the guides at Simply Charlotte Mason? Or at least the book lists?

The past two years we've used Story of the World (on audio) as a spine and filled in with books from the time period. I find book recommendations here, at SCM, and at Ambleside.

This year, though, we chose to do the Ancient Egypt module from SCM. It does incorporate Bible, but this year it fits in quite nicely since we're reading about Moses and the plight of the Israelites in Egypt.

The only difficulty was the cost of the initial purchase of the books from the list. I haven't decided what we'll use next year, but we'll likely continue with SCM and study Ancient Greece.

At any rate, the book lists here are so helpful for planning history.

What grade, Misty? And what period of history?

Off the top of my head, it sounds like you'd really benefit from the guides and booklists at RC History. The four guides cover from Ancient History through Modern, so pick your period of study first, and then, what's nice is that there are four different booklists (to accomodate different ages/reading abilities) that coordinate with each guide. There are books from beginning reader (or even non-reader that Mom will read aloud to) up through Rhetoric (high school) level. The book choices are excellent.

If you're looking to flesh out periods of study a little more, then you'll want to bookmark and refer often to Reading Your Way Through History, which is an excellent Catholic booklist coordinated with periods of history.

jawgee - I have (nice to hear from you) but stopped for need of a break a couple years ago. I was thinking of going back. Do you really feel like we need the guides now that they post the books? couldn't they just read through them and discuss them with us? I did like them it was - at the time - overwhelming trying to buy all the books. Now I am only looking to use it for high school as an independent study.

Grade is going into 10th. I would like to get the US history/government out of the way and then I am open to what ever time period my children would like to cover to get the 2 high school social studies credit.

Mackfam - thanks I will look at the book lists. Also, the RC history I did try once and it was oh so confusing but similar to SCM in the concept.

I think maybe using the SCM and then adding in some more Catholic in nature books in the same time period might be a great way to get a win-win situation. Jawgee what are your thoughts on that being you've seen the SCM history guides.

Love to hear more thoughts although these are right up my type of learning. Misty

Misty, this is my first year using the actual guide from SCM. I had the guide included in a large purchase from SCM, so I decided to use it to help keep us on schedule.

That said, I've never used their guides in the past and we've really enjoyed history. So, yes, I think just using their book list (which is what I've done in the past) would be fine.

I would be hesitant to use their guide and some of their books for Middle Ages/Renaissance/Reformation, because of clear differences in doctrine (and I'm sure a lot of anti-Catholic beliefs). Otherwise, though, I've been very happy with the lists as they are.

If you are looking for 1600-current times (including American History), the books on SCM under Module 5 (Early Modern Times) have been very good, in my experience. I like Story of the World as the spine, because it is so convenient to listen to in the car, but SCM's Stories of America series is very readable and keeps the attention of the younger children.

Thanks Monica, I think I am going to do Module 5 & 6 (10-11th grade) for my 2 history credits. 1 in US and 1 in World. Glad to know module 5 is ok. I think I will use the lists of books from the SCM lists and then incorporate some of the ones from the above site mentioned and a book I requested by another Catholic mom who has reading lists by subject. (?Love of Literature maybe?)

Thanks I think that's what I will work with. Blessings Misty

Monica - do you find the story telling approach on the audio of Story of the World easy on the ears or to sing song-y? What ages do you have listening to it? Would a high schooler think it's silly?
