See this Kindle topic bumped reminded me...

Has anyone integrated an ebook reader into their high school plans? I'm really considering a Kindle 2 with text to speech option to increase volume reading...

Any tips?

Love,

What is text to speech? Is this like an audio book? (Sorry, still have a pre-caffeine brain!)

I believe that text to speech is offered on the Kindle but not on others. I believe that my brother enjoys this feature on his Kindle to listen to books. I'm not completely sure, though...will need to remember to ask him...

Love,

I absolutely love my Kindle, but the text-to-speech is a computer-generated voice to read the text (and is not available for all books. It depends on publisher, and other rights issues.)

Personally? I don't like it and don't use it. I would highly suggest listening to one if that is a big motivator to purchase the Kindle.

That being said, I DO love my Kindle and love being able to carry 233 books in a slim little volume. There are so many classics available free or less than $2 that I can see it being very advantageous for high school reading.

BUT, getting library books is a pain. It's possible, but requires a conversion program. The Sony e-reader is easy for library books, but the Sony tore doesn't have the ease of Amazon.

I usually have mine with me, so when we bump into each other around town, I'd be happy to show you :)

Hey, hey, Melanie, thanks so much! It's so good to see you here. I'll take you up on your kind offer

When you say, "library books", I'm a little confused...can you clarify? And I'm all for ease so any words of advice on that is great.

Thanks for clarifying the text-to-speech option. My brother (haven't talked with him yet about this) is using the text-to-speech to knock out books connected to his graduate program. So I think it's just a pragmatic thing because he isn't a speed reader and he needs to get through a lot of books. I'm guessing that my ds wouldn't mind the sound but it would be great to see before we purchase.

Love,

You can borrow e-books from the local libraries. (Phoenix Digital is hooked up to the Mesa libraries) They expire after a certain amount of time, but most library books that can be checked out that way are one format (which the Kindle doesn't read). There are tons of books available this way -- DH borrows from the digital library all the time.
