Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A dear friend of mine has a high school senior who is down at UNC right now interviewing for a great scholarship. He stopped for daily Mass at the Newman Center and was really disappointed. He's coming from the Arlington Diocese and The Heights (and Opus Dei school). Does anyone have any insight to being Catholic at UNC or even parishes in the area that might be a good fit for him?

St. Thomas More parish is in Chapel Hill. I live west of there and do not know anyone there personally. There is an Opus Dei group that meets in Raleigh. The Raleigh diocese has a Young Adult Ministry that starts at 18, but I do not know much about it. There is a group listed on the St. Thomas More website.

There should be a priest assigned to the Newman Center and I found this website for them:

Best wishes!

Skip the Newman Center. I am an UNC alum and was very involved with the Newman center. If I could go back and do it over, I would.

Caroline,
If you could do it over, what would you do?

Well, I think it really depends on the situation. I really think the Newman Center kept me actively involved in the Church at a time that I could have easily have strayed. I graduated in 1992. Some people loved it, some people didn't. I knew some people at UNC's Newman Center from my youth group activities in the (Raleigh) diocese so that really helped me.

If I had to do it over, I wouldn't have participated with the Newman Center at all. Maybe Mass only-- it is on campus and easy to get to. But, really, I felt like it was a club or a clique. I know people who have been involved with it and they were very happy, so maybe it was just my group, but I was miserable and quit attending church my senior year just to avoid all of drama and nonsense.
