Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Do you employ a tutor for any of your high schooler's classes? I am trying to figure out a fair price to pay for weekly tutoring. Would you mind sharing what you pay?

I did two years ago when we lived in Washington State. I seem to remember $30 per hour. It might have been $35. She did some tutoring and would also grade English and history papers. My Latin is pretty basic, so I really needed help. It was money well spent.

I don't have a high schooler yet.

However, I thought I'd chime in to say that we pay $40 an hour for dyslexia tutoring for one of our children. (Ouch!) From what I understand, that's pretty much the going tutoring rate in our area (southern Wisconsin), give or take $5. The dyslexia tutor also tutors high schoolers in other areas (math, foreign language, etc.), and he charges the same rate for them.

When I was a tutor in small town midwest, I charged $20 per hour, which was low for our area.

I pay a math tutor $15/half hour to tutor in Algebra, Geometry and he says advanced math when we get there. (He teaches math at the local high school.)

When my oldest was struggling with reading we paid $65 an hour for her help - that really was painful but it got results.

I have a retired Catholic school teacher tutoring my 2 high schoolers in Latin once a week. She charges $15/hr (small Midwest town).

Ok, it varies by region. For Spanish tutoring I paid $25 per hour and that was a very good price for a very good tutor. For Latin, the fee was $50 per hour but he would tutor up to 12 students at that fee. We arranged a little co-op and at least part of the time the students met at my house . I know of at least one math tutor and I believe they charge somewhere in that range as well. We did have to pay the fee ourselves for a short time after everyone else dropped out (1 went on to a private school, 1 was already learning 3 languages and decided to drop the formal Latin and continue with the other 2 languages and just self -study Latin via mail with a relative and the others didn't want to do Latin anymore. We continued long enough to be qualified to jump in at 2nd course college Latin. Our daughter didn't want to pursue it after her 2 years with the tutor and is taking French now (no tutor but a program with a lot of immersion.

Now, honestly, both of these situations was really more than just tutoring because, while I had books and lesson plans, both of these basically ran with the class, did assessments, modified their own way and gave grades at the end of the term. Both were retired teachers - one a high school, the other a Phd with teaching experience in English, German, Latin and probably a dozen other things at both high school and college levels. With Spanish, we used Seton's plans. For Latin we had Kolbe AK for Wheelock. Both teachers had their own materials and notes from years of teaching and added to the course and went at the pace of the students.

I have never regretted the tutoring help, though I will say it put a huge dent in our pocketbooks and overall it might have been cheaper in the long run to just dual enroll - but you have to have language experience before you can duel enroll in languages and usually have to be a junior though I've heard of a number of exceptions.
