Don't know how to describe this book. In some ways it could almost be a wordless book becasue it relies so heavily on series of pictures to "tell" the story - but it does have some text - short dialogue between the characters. The text is minimal. The style is also somewhat like a graphic novel or comic book, with a series of action panels on each page, showing the action progressing.

It is about a young shoeshine boy who finds a red cloth which has floated down from the tenement laundry lines. He goes on an adventure to seek its owner and encounters many neighbors of varying ethnicities. It offers to the young reader a subtle exposure to the lives of immigrant families and their cultures.

The illustrations are really quaint and lend it a feeling of the turn of century tenements of New York it is depicting. Colors are mostly muted (browns and black & white with muted pales) so that the reds, which play into the heart of the story stand out.

Just lovely! Can't say enough about this sweet and creative story.
