Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was looking around in REI last week and I saw some really neat nature books. So, I ordered them from www.fulcrumbooks.com

They are books about America's Deserts, Seashores, Mountains, Prairies, etc called "America's Deserts, Guide to Plants and Animals" by Marianne D. Wallace. Just replace deserts with the area you want to study, and that is what the title of the books are. Inside are colorful pictures of plants, animals and ecosystems with maps attached with the area of study.

I am very careful about the books I buy, because I don't like a lot of clutter and excess, but these books pretty much cover what my girls should know (or what I think they should know!) about America and the critters and plants that surround us.

I highly recommend these books. Bridget

Bridget is right - these are wonderful nature study books. They are so well done and cover so many areas. Really help you understand the ecosystems of the US. My favorites are the deserts and mountains ones.

They are listed for age 9-12, and I think that is a good assessment for reading level and using independently as a resource. But they can definitely be used with a parent from even preschool up. The illustrations are great and there is a lot to look at and talk about on each page.

Our library has only one of Marianne Wallace's books, the one on the seashore, but we used it before our trip to the beach and really found it useful. I read it to my boys (7 and 3), and then my 7 yo used it as a reference while there.

Oh, we have the Prairies and Grasslands book! I guess I should pay more attention to the people who actually WRITE the books!

It's a nice book. I picked it up a number of years ago when we lived in St. Louis and could actually visit a prairie. I'll have to check out the others.
