Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

In another thread I just posted about the new Jan Brett book we read.

The 3 Little Dassies - The latest book from Jan Brett. It's an adapted version of the "3 little pigs" but featuring an African rodent called a dassie and its nemesis the eagle. LOVED IT...clever revamping of the story and of course it has the beautiful Jan Brett illustrations which I especially loved for the sidebar pictures featuring gorgeous examples of African cloth patterns. It's a great way to learn about some some flora and fauna of Namibia Africa.

I really like comparing different versions of the story and those which are adaptations using different animals and locales. We enjoy it for various stories, but i particularly like the 3 Little Pigs. So what are your favorite versions of the 3 Little Pigs in picture book? Favorite illustrators? What about different variations that "change up" the story.

Another story I love is The Three Little Javelinas (Susan Lowell) - Oh so cute. I like the southwest so this little cultural window on the animals and environment of the Sonoran Desert is a lot of fun.

The True Story of the Three Little Pigs (Jon Scieszka) - Very funny. Love books that tell "the other side of the story."

And for real versions of the Three Little Pigs I think my favorite it Paul Galdone's. All of his fairy tale books are my favorites - love 'em.

I thought I posted in this thread last week!
My 3y/o the 3 little pigs! I've told him many variations of it, at his request...3 little dolphins (and a big, bad shark), 3 little walruses (and a big, bad polar bear...)

I've acquired a copy of the "The 3 Little Javelinas" to give him as a present. And, when I was at B&N the other day, I came across book that looks great, "The Three Little Wolves & the big Bad Pig"
I think I might try to lay my hands on a copy before Christmas.

The Paul Galdone illustrations are really darling! so I might be heading over to B&N soon!

ETA: Now that I'm reading some of the reviews of "the 3 little wolves and the big, bad pig" I'm definitley going to check it out carefully before buying...Thankfully our local store has a copy I can preview.

And I haven't read this one, but this one, Porkenstein, is a "sequel" to the original story.

oh, I've got one! The 3 Little Hawaiian Pigs and the Magic Shark. the art isn't great but it is culturally unique.

have we done this for other fairy tales? one of my favorite "alternate view" stories is this variation on the big bad wolf story: Big Bad Wolf. this is a very good lesson at not judging others.

oh, and THIS one is gorgeous: Little Red Snapper.

oops. I seem to have gotten carried away ...

Viviane, that Big Bad Wolf one looks funny and reminds me of Tell the Truth B.B. Wolf, which is probably of a similar genre - defeding the wolf - not what he appears sort of story.

And I love the link to that Little Red snapper. Looks like a great story. We should start a thread for Llittle Red Riding Hood variations - and all the rest. I love fairy tale variation picture books - can't you tell.
