Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This book has been mentioned before in a WWI thread but I hadn't read it until recently. It is two stories. One is a history shared by a grandfather with his granddaughter. He describes his childhood as an orphan, living in a monastery/orphanage in Italy. There he learned to care for the doves and learn their "language." During WWI soldiers came to take the doves for communication purposes and also "drafted" him to care for the doves. The experience he and the doves have it the war is shared. In ths way he (the grandfather) shares his love of the doves. The rest of the story focuses on the the special relationship the grandfather and granddaughter share through caring for and learning abut doves. This book was particularly touchign to me at this time because of the death of the grandfather and the child's reaction to it. My children faced that this spring with my father's death. Definitely a hankie book.
