Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney.

We read it tonight. Two embarrassing questions:

How do you pronounce RUMPHIUS?

How do you pronounce LUPINE?

Apparently nobody knows! I guess that means that you get to decide how it's pronounced.

Well, my default way was

Rum-fee-us

Loo-pyne

but ds and I weren't quite feeling it.

We say Rum-fee-is (the u sounds like short i and the s says s as in spoon)
and loo-pine (long i).

These are the pronunciations that I heard from a college English professor and they stuck. Our pronunciations could be a West coast thing though.

We have lupines growing in ours and our neighbors' yards and along the side of our freeway exit. They are great flowers!

Ah, then I'm saying like West coasters! Okay!

My son wants to grow them now. Need to find out if they can be an East Coast thing!

Well, I guess I have been mispronouncing her name all of these years. I have always said 'Rum-fuss.' Oops. It's too late to change now.

I was just thinking about this book as I picked it up from the library for our annual check-out (with this book, I mean.) I have been getting this book every spring for the last 6 years. My youngest is 7 so I wonder how much longer we will be doing the spring check out. I can't imagine a spring without Miss Rumphius (however you pronounce her name.)

I remember seeing a beautiful field of them in Maine on a trip one time, so I'm sure that you can grow them in the East.

I had been meaning to read it for a while, and was so happy to come upon a copy at a used book sale.

Although it's wonderful for the spring season, I personally was very touched by some things.

One was to have patience, all in God's time. The fact that she couldn't plant more flowers because of her health spoke volumes to me. How many times my plans fall apart because God's plans is the one to be done? Sickness, family matters, travel, money situations.... Even that simple garden plan has had to be postponed so many times.

And making the world beautiful is not just a cosmetic challenge, but our Christian challenge, living and spreading the Gospel. Am I living my life in such a way that I am making the world more beautiful? Am I living the corporal and spiritual works of mercy?

Probably not what the author intended, but I was quite moved last night pondering on these things.
