Audubon: Painter of Birds in the Wild Frontier

This is a great book about Audobon. The pictures are very realistic and exciting, plus it highlights interesting events in his life (meeting Daniel Boone, for instance).

I think it gives a very realistic portrait of him... he loved his birds and everything else (job, family) came second. Warning: he killed the birds in order to draw them in perfect detail. The book does not gloss over this. In fact, Daniel Boone shows him how to kill squirrels in a way that left their bodies unmarked. But- how can I say this... the book addresses this in a very low key way that did not make me cringe or send my dc into tears. It was sad to read, but in frontier days, that's how it was. There were no long range video cameras .

Anyway- great pictures of the passenger pigeons, very exciting stories...
a good read for bird lovers!
