The Twelve Days of Christmas in Virginia by Sue Corbett, Henry Cole (Illustrator)

We checked this one from the library and just loved it. It touches on the places and things to do in Virginia, like the presidents' birthplaces, lighthouses, Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown, etc.

Each page has a letter written from the brother who is visiting his cousin in Virginia, then the main page has the verse of the song "On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, a cardinal in a dogwood tree" (the state bird and flower).

Reading to both my boys we didn't go into the longer letter, but pointed out the highlights and sang the song.

Another bonus of this book was there was a hidden cardinal on almost all the pages, which was fun to find.

Sterling Publishing has other Twelve Days State-by-state books. I haven't seen any others, but if they are a similar format, they would be a great addition to your US history/social studies picture books. I'd also read these if I was doing a bit of traveling to the state.

I hope they cover more states -- we're hooked. This and The Christmas Tree in the White House by Gary Hines were two of our favorite "local history" Christmas books.

We got the 12 days of Minnesota as a Christmas gift from our MN relatives and the kids love it!!!!!
