Based on a true story from 1914 when Boston area children worked to raise money to purchase 3 elephants for the local zoo. The elephants were being retired from the circus and had been offered for sale for $6000. They have 2 months to raise the funds for the purchase. Soon thousands of local children are helping out too - washing windows, donating tooth fairy money, putting on shows, etc. It is a very sweet story of determination and hard work, plus a fun look at an interesting slice of little-known local history. Judges illustrations are lovely, very engaging and mix details of the story from the children's point of view of illustrations of actual clippings for the newspaper of the day.

Lita Judge is a fairly new author/illustrator, but I have LOVED each of her historical-event based picture books so far. They are wonderful. (Going to go post about another one )
