Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Bring me some apples and I'll make you a Pie: a story about Edna Lewis

By Robbin Gourley

Warning: do not read this book if you are hungry. Do not.

This is the story of Edna Lewis, a famous chef who grew up in Freetown, Va- a farming community started by her grandfather who was a freed slave.
The story follows the seasons and the harvests that go with each.
We loved the harvest rhymes for each food. Here's one from the corn page:

"Wake up, Jacon, Day's a-breakin.
Fryin' pan's on and cornbread's bakin'.
Bacon in the pan. Coffee in the pot.
Git up now and get it while it's hot."

By the end of this book I was starving and wanted to go live on a farm like Edna. At the end there was even more: a nice biography of Edna with a lovely photo of her... plus many of the recipes from the book!
This was a huge hit at my house.

Seasons, farming, chefs, rhymes, country, Edna Lewis, family, harvest
