Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm not sure why any of Doris Burn's books haven't made onto great lists or won awards; she is hands-down our favorite illustrator and a lovely author as well.

My first adventure with her was in Liesel Moak Skorpen's book "We Were Tired of Living in a House" (it's only in print now with a new illustrator unfortunately... you'd have to pore through the used sellers section to make sure you get the original) which is a true delight to read.

We finally got "Andrew Henry's Meadow" which is almost as good of a book but equally wonderful drawings. I believe this is her only book authored that is in print still.

She's also authored "The Summerfolk" and "The Tale of Lazy Lizard Canyon" in addition to illustrating dozen other books.

Her books seem to feature children from large (larger than 2-3 child anyway) families and inspire kids to do active, creative things like build wonderful tree forts and spend lazy days in the woods.

I wish her other books would get reprinted; they are such treasures...

So keep an eye out.

A friend recently loaned me this book and said that it's one of her favorites and knew we would like it.

Before I had a chance to read it, my oldest read it. He liked it SOOO much that he sat my 7yo and 4yo down to read it to them! Unfortunately I never did read it...but if my friend and son have anything to say about this author they would agree!!!!
