Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My Grandma Likes To Say
by Denise Brennan-Nelson
illus. by Jane Monroe Donovan

We found this at the library and took it home on a whim. What fun! Not only is there a cute little rhyme on each page of what a child might think when hearing the expressions of an older generation but there is also a little explanation of what the phrase means or where it might have come from and even references to the phrase in plays, books or movies. My oldest explained the origin of the phrase "spilled the beans" to us as dinner last night when I used it in regards to a surprise party.

According to Amazon, it is one of three of it's kind by this author.

Sample:
"That's a horse of a different color,"
my grandma likes to say.
I'm not sure what she means
but I like it anyway.

Polka dots and stripes,
purple, orange, and blue--
What color would a horse be
if it were up to YOU?

keywords: colloquialisms, sayings, grandma, figures of speech, proverbs, cliches, idioms

Yes, great book! We've read the other two as well:
My Momma Likes to Say and My Teacher Likes to Say. They are both equally entertaining and informative. I think this is a great way to introduce children to colloquialisms and idioms of our language.
