Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This book follows an effective pattern I've noticed recently in some historical picture books - each page, while including brief narrative text, ends with a quote from the figure being presented - in this case Lincoln. The quote relates to the test and is set apart in different italic type. The book covers his early days through to the end of the Civil War.

The 3/4 page spread illustrations by Kadir Nelson (who is showing up all over and becoming a new favorite illustrator of mine) are vibrant and engaging. He uses angles and different perspectives with great results.

The book includes in the endnotes a timeline of important dates, resources to find out more and the words of the Gettysburg address. And the Author's and Illustrator's personal notes are very interesting.
