Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The subtitle is "Being the MOSTLY True Adventures of Abraham Lincoln's Trouble-Making Sons, TAD and Willie" which pretty much paints a picture of what to expect in reading this book. The Lincoln children, especially the youngest, Tad, had a reputation for mischief and most people considered the Lincolns permissive and indulgent parents for not putting a stop to the antics. This book uses an actual incident where President Lincoln pardons the boys' soldier doll, Jack, as the basis for the story. It has great illustrations which really do a wonderful job of showing the period dress and furnishing. They feel very realistic. I especially love the boys in the Zouave uniforms. It also has short bios of all the people mentioned in the book which includes some of the staff and friends of the Lincolns.
