Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK, ladies. This Sunday my friend and I are driving 2+ hours 1 way with 4 kids to meet Jan Brett in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

I am ecstatic! So, my question is: is there etiquette for this kind of event? Are we allowed to bring copies of her books from home for her to sign or only the things we buy there. Will there be things to buy there besides her brand new book, which is the reason for the tour? Will she pose for pictures with the kids? Should 5 YO DS draw a picture and write her a note to thank her for her beautifully illustrated books?

Any info and suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated!

You might want to call ahead and ask the store (or wherever she is appearing) about this. Be sure they are accepting an unlimited number of folks and for how long. You'd hate to travel that far, and find out people were in line for hours ahead of you for only 200 spots, or something like that.

We went to the National Book Festival this past Sept. and Jan Brett was there. We were going to get in her line but you could only have her sign her new book that was out, I think it has something to do with the White House. So we didn't get in line. As far as pictures go, it has to be fast, at least my experience. At the festival I started to talk to Imacculee Ilibigaza (I know I really messed up her spelling) and she started to chat back. alot. and then her "assistant", the guy each author had hanging
over them. told us to move along! Anyways, it all depends I'd say on your event and the author too. Tiki Barber made way extra time and had them set up an extra make shift area to continue signing when his shift was over so as to accommodate everyone, whereas Robert Sabuda hightailed it out of there when his time was over and we were 5 back in line and we all ended up with nothing. You don't know their personalities (or their schedules for the rest of the day).

Warn the kiddos though that you should really just expect literally 2 minutes with her and then just pray for more!!! Then you won't be disappointed, kwim?

We just had a signing with Jim Arnosky last week and had a wonderful time!

bringing books from home is fine
in fact, he really seemed to enjoy seeing the older books

he had several of his books, not just the latest release, available for purchase

he would only sign his books (new or old didn't matter), not bookmarks, notepads, backpacks, or whatever

My boys gathered around him for a picture at his request, but he didn't pose with everyone. I don't know how many cared to ask either though.

He was very chatty with my boys considering how long the line was (over 400 kids showed up!) and he had DRIVEN in from Vermont for the event.

My 3rd ds just happened to have had an assignment earlier in the week to write a letter to an author of a book he enjoyed and it just happened he picked Mr. Arnosky. Mr. Arnosky seemed genuine when he accepted the letter in wanting to read it after he was done signing. We didn't get that "this will be the trash as soon as you walk out" vibe, kwim?

He didn't do very personal inscriptions in the books. Everyone in line was given a post-it note to write who he should dedicate to for spelling accuracy and then his name. So everyone got "To: kid's name" with "Jim Arnosky" below it. I don't know if he'd have been more personal with less people there, but given the numbers of signing he had to do, I understood the need for being brief.

Thanks for the info. I called the museum and learned that she'll sign for 2 hours, 225 books. One book per "unit" i.e., family. So, we'll just buy her new book and pray we can take a picture of the kids with her.

I think we'll also leave earlier, in hopes of being one of the 225 lucky ones!
