Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

... use it in your homeschool? Do you use it replace certain other things (like vocabulary words)? Do you use it in addition?

I have both Catholic Mosaic and Christmas Mosaic. I love looking through them...I am just not sure how to put them into action.

I would love to hear how other incorporate them.

Especially Christmas Mosaic.

Would Christmas Mosaic work with Elizabeth's Tomie de Paola unit, or would that be too much? Bits of each?

I never do the vocabulary. I use it for religion. I choose a bible story book and read a story a day (also usually read from the Treasure box books alternating with the bible) and then read from the Catholic Mosaic books the same way you would with FIAR. I try to hit the easier crafty ideas and the discussion points. Sometimes I mix it in with other curriculum and then I don't use it every week. I never read it 5 days a week, though...usually only 3. Sometimes I try for an oral narration that I type out for the child as they dictate.

We've done the de Paola unit in parts almost every year for years now. But I don't do as much as Elizabeth included in it. I choose 2 books a week, starting with the less religious ones and moving toward the nativity ones the last week of Advent. I try to plan a craft or a food activity for each book. I also try to read a Jotham's Journey type book. I wouldn't try to do Christmas Mosaic and the de Paola unit the same year. I'd alternate them. What I've discovered is that the kids totally look forward to these books and it becomes a part of Christmas for them. It makes me happy to see them remembering and loving the books.

That said, I have never completed even one of my Christmas plans. Life takes over. We do what we can, sometimes skipping a craft or a food project, sometimes dropping a book or two. Its still good, if not perfect.

thought I would bump up this post to see if anyone else has thoughts and comments. I am trying to start planning for Advent and am looking at both Christmas Mosaic and Elizabeth's unit.

Hi Sylvia,
If using Christmas Mosaic, I would choose one book to read aloud per week for Advent, (The booklist is divided up by topics for Advent.) and two more for the weeks after Christmas. When Advent starts, I pull all the Advent/Christmas books out and display them across the piano (where the music usually sits). Then the children can go and look through any of them throughout the seasons of Advent and Christmas. But we pick just a few to focus on each year as a family. Some we read every year.

The great benefit of Elizabeth's unit, aside from its loveliness, is that it is free and the books are easily borrowed through the library. You may have some hunting to do with a few of the Mosaic titles.

The benefit of Christmas Mosaic is that it gives a variety of titles (huge booklist) and approaches to Christmas.

Thanks Margot, sounds like I just need to sit down and starting looking at it all!
