We all know the big names in children's literature and can fully expect a quality book when checking out something from Brett, DePaola, McCloskey, Polacco, etc...

But I am wondering what sticks out in your mind that was a surprise sort of treasure. This would be the library book you threw in your bag (without having flipped more than a couple pages) along with your other weekly dozen books. When we go to the library, I have a few authors I automatically peruse and a few living, noble, beautiful or true books I make sure to get. Then I let the kids pick out their "cotton candy books" as I say and don't expect too much from them.

From those seemingly mundane books, these are a few off the top of my head that were genuine welcome surprises.

-We Were Tired of Living in a House- Liesel Moak Skorpen. The illustrations with Doris Burn are incredibly superior and lovely but they are OOP now and the cartoonier ones in their stead. I picked this up in an old free bin at a rummage sale; it is in my personal Top 10 list of favorite children's books ever.

-My Son John- Jim Aylesworth

-Carolina's Gift: A Story of Peru -Diaz Katacha

-Many Moons -James Thurber

What a great idea for a thread. Hopefully we'll generate some wonderful recommendations that might not have come up otherwise. I must say though I'm having a hard time. I tend to judge a book by it's cover (well the illustrations anyway ) so if it is a total unknown to me it has to look pretty good before I bring it home. I'm probably more often disappointed by something I thought would be better than by something that was better than expected. So I've been thinking, thinking this evening and will continue 'til I have some to post.

FUnny you should mention this one. I have a copy of this from whne I was a little girl. We recently brought it here from my parent's house. This was one of my absolute favorites when I was littel. I REALLY wanted to live in a treehouse or on the raft. What fun that would have been!!

Victoria's Smile is one of my favorites. I love the fact that the other students in her class drew the pictures. It is a story that my oldest goes back to a lot.
