We just read this book by Joanne Ryder.

It's about the life cycle of cicadas, specifically the 17 yr ones, but they do mention the annual ones at the end. But it's all in a lovely story with beautiful illustrations. It looks like Amazon only has used ones available, and no picture on their site, but it's really a nice book.
