Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

by Robert Sabuda

keywords: stained glass, middle ages, medieval, knights, kings, Merlin, sword, Excalibur, jousting, archbishop, Le Morte D'arthur, Sir Thomas Malory, honesty

This retelling of Arthur and the Sword in the Stone from Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte D'arthur is simply gorgeous! In luscious stained glass that fills and overflows from one page to the next the classic tale unfolds. Robert Sabuda is well known for his pop-up books like Castle which you can see in action here. I think his ability to make active books (books that literally move) have influenced this book. The illustrations are flowingly filled with movement - cloaks billow and flames leap while the sword remains firmly immobile in the center of the page.

I included the keyword archbishop as there are two great shots of him in the beginning of the story while everyone is at High Mass in Londontown.

Robert Sabuda also created the mosaics for Saint Valentine

I was going to put this in my Amazon cart, but I didn't even see used books available.    I'm hoping the library has it.

This is so weird. I was just packing one of our bookshelves for the move, and I came across this book - I had forgotten all about it. I put it into the stack of books to keep out for ds9. Then I popped on here, and there was your post about it.

How funny, Laura! I think your son will like it.

Rachel, when I click on the Amazon Link it says there are 17 Used & New Available.       I've never ordered off Amazon as we don't buy books so I didn't think to check for availability issues. I'm sorry!

I had wondered about this one. It's one we haven't read.

Thank you Angie for posting that. A year ago I was grappling about buying the Valentine book by him because of my suspicions. It is so difficult in this world to decide what to do and how to spend your money. I have enjoyed the books by Sabuda and his partner but I decided that we would not purchase his books new in order to not provide money towards a cause that might possibly be used against us...

Angie provided the link as a point of information, trusting each of our members to decide for themselves how to take the choicest part.

Jennifer, we have some of Sabuda's books and have enjoyed them. (I especially like Saint Valentine, but I suspect my boys would rank the dinosaur pop-up book as #1!) I had not seen Arthur and the Sword, so I've requested it at the library since my littles are currently on a Middle Ages Knightand Swords kick.

Jennifer, thanks for posting about *Author and the Sword.* I look forward to tracking it down. You also reminded me to post about...

Also linking King Arthur: The Sword in the Stone. A bit longer, more detailed version than Sabuda's version listed above.

We read both of them this week and enjoyed both! Fun to compare both the story/text and the illustrations!
