I came across our copy of 17 Kings and 42 Elephants by Margaret Mahy and was reminded how much my boys LOVE this book. It was one of Colin's first favorites.

The paintings are batik on silk and very beautiful. The rhythm of the story is fabulous and even though there are some made-up words (hippopotomums for example), it is delightful. Very musical in tone, and wonderful for reading aloud and memorizing.

They pass many wonderful animals -- flamingos, tigers, hippos, crocodiles! The boys always had fun finding the different animals on each page! I'm sure JP would love it too!
