Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What can you tell me about Christmas Mosaic? I know it's more than just a list of books but can you explain to me exactly what it is? How it works?

Is there a sample somewhere to view?

Thank you
Debbie

Debbie --

I'm not sure about a sample, but I just bought and received my Christmas Mosaic. It's essentially a list of literature books that have Christmas meaning. She breaks down the lists with into weeks with Advent reflections from several of the writers here on the board. Each book includes: Vocabulary, Discussion Questions, Copywork, Parent's help page (with ideas for conversation or topics) and Encrichment activities (crafts, recipes, etc.)

HTH!!

Thank you. I assume it is geared towards a wide age range?   I have 2 boys ages 5 and 9 and a daughter who just turned 4.

Also, are there a large number of books to chose from? I am not sure how many I could find at the library. Also, is it set up to do a book per week, per day, a certain number of books per week etc...

It sounds like something I would LOVE to have but obviously there is a time crunch with Advent beginning so soon. Is there a beginning list somewhere so I could at least have the books asap?

Thank you
Debbie

I think it would work fine for ages 4 - 9! It's mostly picture books, but I think your 9 year old will still like the stories, activities, etc.

HUGE number of books to choose from. Cay lists a number of them in this thread The ones she highlights and lists there are preschool friendly as well.

Here's some more discussion on books here

There's probably more posts with lists too.

FYI -- You can buy Cay's book from Margot here

and Margot sells a bunch of her books in a package deal here

HTH!!

I just wanted to say the CHRISTMAS MOSAIC guide is FABULOUS! I ordered mine right away, peeked at it, then set it aside (I wanted it to be fresh & new to me too!)

Just this morning I brought it to the computer and logged into my library's catalog. I put 18 books on hold (8 for one card, as i already had 2 other books on hold for that card, and 10 for the other card.) i have 5 more books marked that I'll check out (provided they're not already checked out to someone at that time) when I've picked up that first set. While we might not "do" each of these books as written in the Christmas Mosaic manual, I wanted to get the books so I could read through them. I plan to pick a few of them from our readings this year to purchase after Christmas to add to our personal collection of Christmas books. (These are only brought out for the Holiday time.) I've already added to our Christmas book collection for this year (with the Christmas Mosaic manual and library book sale finds.)

Anyway, yes, the Mosaic is chock full of "lesson guides" (for lack of a better word) for a wide assortment of books. Though picture books, the books are varied in message and each message is good for all ages, in my opinion. My daughter is 10 and I have no problem doing these books with her. (And again next year, etc.)

Additionally, the BOOKLIST is *HUGE*, and includes books for preschool through teens/family read alouds, as well as movies for family viewing. There is a section for SELECTED ANNOTATIONS so you can read a bit about specific books. Then, as I said the "guide part" that not only has the stuff that Maryan mentioned but also has "articles" about various holiday topics, and the appendix has more crafts, recipes, and a nice collection of coloring pages.

Whether one is Catholic or not (we're not) this book, Christmas Mosaic, is truly fabulous. To me it rings a little bit like a Five in a Row manual (though not so curriculum/subject structured) in its gentle approach to discussions about themes/messages in the book.

As you can see, I highly recommend the Christmas Mosaic!
